Secondary liver cancer

Hello,

My dad was diagnosed with secondary liver and pancreatic cancer last May. For a long time now we have tried many different things to help. He was on chemotherapy to try and maintain the tumour but unfortunately this did not work.

In recent months he has been on a course of steroids which caused him to become diabetic and has now been provided a reduced amount. He is also still taking morphine.

In recent weeks, the liver has now shut down and he has become jaundice and his legs and stomach have become very swollen with all the fluid. He has been provided water tablets to try and reduce this and we have been told his stomach can be drained but not his legs.

I would like some sort of education on what the next steps may be? Will his other organs start to shut down now? Once the liver has shut down, will his other organs now shut down quickly? I know no one can provide a definite timeline but any sort of guidance would be much appreciated as I cannot switch off thinking about him and what is going to happen. I know that will never change but I feel more in control with my emotions if I know what to expect.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hello

You sound like me..I needed to know everything. What was I looking for etc.. I googled everything

In the end I had to go with the flow. Mum didn’t want to know . So I respected that.

She left us two days ago after only one month with secondary liver and lung cancer diagnosis.

The end was really only over three days where things went downhill rapidly but with the help of Marie Curie and hospice at home we did a grand job to ensure it was peaceful and as mum wanted. Mum was jaundiced and her tummy was swollen btu she never complained of pain. She lost so much weight in such a short space of time it was obvious where it wa going. On the last day her hands were clammy and she was confused so we called the ditrsict nurse for help and they came to fit the syringe driver but to be honest Mum went before that as she wouldn’t have wanted that.

Get support from the professionals and  are the most of every moment. Thinking  of you x

  • My mum is in the same position. Quite well.but jaundiced and swollen legs. Been told there is nothing they can do

I just can't lose her yet. Don't know how I'll.cope.

  • Hi guys,

We were called in yesterday and told that my mom had Jaundice as a result of a tumour blocking her bile duct and there was nothing they could do about it. In a way I feel like they’ve just sent her home to die, but she is doing really well (thank God).

like you all I’m finding it difficult to accept or even deal with everything that’s going on and being said but I think we have to remain strong. There is nothing else to be done.
