Cancelled Chemo.?

My step dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in January, and after further tests it was too late and had spread to his liver and also described as terminal.

He was due to have his 4th lot of chemo tomorrow that he was undergoing to stop the cancer growing and to extend his life.

He has been in Macmillan hospital for the last 2 weeks, However, today he went to see his specialist today and have they have now cancelled his chemo.

He dont let on to me and my family the exact details as he never wants to worry us, but I am struggling big time now and cant help to think the worse. I know that it is a matter of time, but what harm can it do just continuing with chemo even if it dont extend his life?

I just want answers and too scared to open up and talk.

  • Hi Deano,

Sorry to hear what is happening with your step-dad.

I understand that he doesn't tell you much so as not to worry you but it might be worth asking him for more information, maybe explain that not knowing can be more worrying for some people?

That aside, chemotherapy drugs are very potent and can do all sorts of damage to a patient's organs so if it is no longer helping him then they may have decided to cancel any more chemo to give your step-dad a better quality of life.  If it is terminal then I can totally understand why he might want to feel as good as possible for the rest of the time he has with you all and have as much of that time with you rather than at hospital appointments.

    Kind regards,
