Alone

I have Tongue cancer and decided not to have operation and was given 12 months to live. This was seven months ago. I have a wonderful palliative care nurse visit me to make sure I have pain killers. I'm 60 very active no friends or family just happy cutting the lawn and hedges. I am really puzzled why that I have no fear of worries about dying and just accept things(not complaining).   Is this a normal ?

  • This possibly came out wrong. I was scared to have my tongue removed because i was alone and afraid of not being able to communicate and death seemed an easier option of which I still stand by. I wish that somebody was close to me but that's ok.   clutching at straws lol.    someone say hi and make my week!

  • Hi Furlongs,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

It sound as if you've had some difficult and scary decisions to make and I'm glad to hear that you are still happy to stand by these. A cancer diagnosis can make us feel very alone, even when we have a number of family and friends. Are you still managing to get out and about and do you have a Maggie's Centre nearby? This is a charity for people with life limiting illnesses and it would be well worth visiting, if there is one local to you. They offer a number of free services from counselling, financial advice, information from a nurse, a range of alternative relaxation therapies and there is always the opportunity to pop in for a welcome cuppa and a chat with others.

If there is not a Maggie's near you, there are a number of other cancer charities and support groups dotted throughout the country. Your specialist nurse, GP, Library or Citizens Advice Bureau, should all be able to point you in the right direction, as these all come under different names.

The fear of dying can vary from person to person. Some people are terrified, while others do not feel particularly fazed by the thought. You might find it helpful to chat to one of the counsellors about your own feelings.

Now that you have found this site, you need never feel alone again, as there is always someone here to chat to and support you.

    Thinking of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
