How can I help: my brother in law has oesophageal cancer and has been given 2 months prognosis

My brother in law has oesophageal cancer and has been given 2 months prognosis. He is at home in bed under palliative care and has a lot of pain in spite of the painkillers he receives.

My sister in law is looking after him.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I can help. I am planning to get some good quality ready meals including soft food ones for as long as he can eat them but wondering what else I could get to give him or her comfort. Suggestions I have seen online include support pillows/blankets/heating,cooling pads but wondering if anyone has been through this with their loved on and can recommend anything

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

  • Hello am35

I'm sorry to hear that your brother-in-law has been given a short prognosis after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Undoubtledy this is a difficult time for you all as a family.

I'm also sorry to hear that at the time of your post, there were some issues with pain control. I don't know if your brother-in-law has access to a palliative care nurse or a local hospice team, but do encourage him or your sister-in-law to reach out for support with improving pain management. If he doesn't have direct access to either of these services, then contact his GP, who will be able to arrange for the appropriate health care professionals to visit him at home.

It's lovely that you want to try to support them both while they are in this difficult period. Certainly, supporting your brother-in-law with whatever tasty treats he feels like he wants, or is able, to eat is a good idea. Your sister-in-law may appreciate practical help around the house and garden to ease the load while she is caring for him. I'm unsure if you live locally to them or not, so you may not be able to do this yourself, but certainly encouraging them to accept any help that is offered or needed can make things a little easier.

Hopefully, some of the members here in the Cancer Chat community who have cared for loved ones through this journey will reply soon to share their experiences with you. If it would help to chat with one of our nurses at any point, then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

Keep in touch if it helps to post here Am35. We're here for you.

Sending you all my best wishes,
