Stage 4 prostate cancer

Hello there, my dad was diagnosed a year ago with stage 4 prostate cancer and we keep having to take him to A&E due to his symptoms. This ordeal means sitting in the waiting room 7 hours a time in pain and discomfort. Sent home without support only to return again and again.

my mum is struggling too needing a hip replacement.

i just don’t know where to turn

  • There are a number of charities throughout the country that might be able to give advice and support. AgeUK might be able to sort some support but I haven't experience of dealing with them. My partner spent a long time in a&e breathless and the oncologist wasn't happy with how they handled him. I'm sorry that our relatives are suffering because our medical care systems have crumbled so badly. I don't understand why emergency oncology phone lines send people to a&e where they're unsupported and suffer in the process. It sometimes feels like we're being signposted to oblivion. Cancer treatment often seems to be without care to me. As long as you're living longer you should be satisfied seems to be the attitude.

  • Hi Matbekreu, and welcome, I'm so sorry to hear your dad's diagnosis, the awful time he has at A+E. and how it's affecting you all. I too have T4 prostate cancer, can I suggest you call your GP, and ask for a referral to the district nurses and the palliative care team, these are not just for end of life care, they are for people like your dad and me, they will support your dad and you, they can help manage his symptoms and pain and make your dad as comfortable as possible, so he can make the most of his time, the district nurses can access specialist nurses, therapies and equipment, I have had them both for well over a year and would recommend them to everyone,

.AgeUK, are helpful, if you call them, make sure you call the local office and not the national number.

    Macmillan has a wonderful helpline 0808 808 00 00

Cancer Research UK NURSE HELPLINE 0808 800 4040

    best wishes.
