Further testing after breast cancer

Hello, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in lockdown in 2020, she had a mastectomy and radiotherapy and then was put in Anastrozole for a couple of years. After this she had her annual mammogram and an annual call with the surgeon. Then in 2023 we found out that it had spread to her liver and peritoneum and she had had multiple chemotherapy medication and other things however none have worked, she has now been put in palliative care for the next couple of months.

my question is should further testing have been done in the mean time? For example blood tests? Surely this would help in picking up any other signs that she had cancer again? I wasn’t sure whether she had just been lost in the system due to Covid or whether this was the protocol for these types of patients?
I just think even some sort of testing should’ve been done, this is just one example I can’t even begin to imagine how many others there would be

  • Unfortunately, testing for breast cancer patients following treatment seems to be sadly lacking.

The same happened to my mum, diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer in 2020, had lumpectomy, and node biopsy, didnt get clear margins so ended up having mastectomy, no chemo or radio therapy required as it supposedly wasnt in nodes.  No further tests other than mammogram on remaining breast and meeting consultant once a year.  2022 she started having really bad pain in shoulders and back, fobbed off with it being her fibromyalgia, after 6 months of fighting with doctors on her behalf finally got ct scan which found cancer in lungs, bones and liver.  At which point she was too weak for treatment.

She was badly let down by the lack of follow up scans for breast cancer patients!
