Dad has terminal prostate cancer

Hi. Really feeling lost with all this. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December that has spread to his bones and lymph nodes. He's started on the hormone injections and his first appointment with specialist was today, but because of the snow he was unable to attend. The doctor rang him and said they would prescribe him some hormone tablets and that chemo isn't a viable option... Is this because it has spread too much? Does anyone have any similar stories with this? He has been given very little information and won't get a new appointment for 3 weeks. Thank you. Any information good or bad would be appreciated

  • Hello Kel143

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's recent diagnosis and that he was unable to attend his first appointment with the specialist. It's understandable that you have questions and may be feeling anxious about things.

We have some information about metastatic prostate cancer on our website that may help. I'd also suggest giving our team of nurses a call to chat things through with them. Hopefully they will be able to offer some advice and support to help whilst your Dad is waiting for his next appointment. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully the appointment in 3 weeks will bring some clarity on your Dad's diagnosis and some reassurance about treatment and management options.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Kel143 my husband was diagnosed in December 2023 last year his cancer has spread to his lymp nodes and also to his bones pelvis spine ribs shoulders all the middle area but not any organs my husband was started on hormone therapy injections the same day he started chemo week and half ago and also started on hormone therapy tablets aswell his PSA level was 776 but has dropped to 17 so carnt understand why your dad carnt have chemo as my hubby is in the same situation as your dad feel free to send me a friend request on here so we can talk regards jackie

  • Thank you so much for replying. I've sent u a request.

I'm not sure why. My dad's 70 and has COPD so maybe that's why. He's got his first consultation on the 8th so I hope we can get some answers. It's so stressful not knowing much  xx

  • Hi Kel123 and a warm welcome to the forum though sorry you have to be hear. I too have T4 advanced prostate cancer that has spread and a bad heart which means chemotherapy for me is not an option as the toxins it causes in the blood would be too much for my heart, Maybe your dads COPD will make chemo too risky. I had radiotherapy with no issues regarding my heart which would seem the likely choice for your dad, PS i am not an expert, Good luck with your consultation and prepare as many questions you can for your meeting, best wishes.

  • Sorry to hear that Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping radiotherapy might be an option then. The doctor didn't say much other than chemo wasn't a viable option and that they would put him on hormone tablets as well as having the injection. It's just been such a long drawn out process waiting for answers. Best wishes to you too. And thank you. I'll let you know how he gets on

  • Happy to help, and thank you for the good wishes. If i can help in any way, just ask.

  • Hi Eddiel hope your well.

My dad's consultation didn't go as we thought. Carrying on with the hormone injections is his only option . He is well at the moment so we can only pray they help for as long as possible

  • Hi Kel143 thank you for letting me know, Sorry your dad has not been offered alternative treatments, I am surprised, did the doctors explain their decision, hormone therapy can keep cancer under control for years and there are always different HT drugs to have when the first ones lose effectiveness which is my only treatment option now as well, I am glad your dad i feeling well though i understand how you feel, I lost my mum to lung cancer and she was offered no treatment, best wishes to you and your dad.

    Eddie

  • Thank you. Sorry to hear that about your mum. My brother went with him so I'm not certain about all the details. My dad just said that it was too far gone. My knowledge is that the hormone injection won't help the bone spread or the lymph nodes so if I'm right, that's the worrying part. Thank you so much for your replies. We just have to take each day as it comes

  • We both may be incurable but we are still treatable HT CAN slow down and stop the cancer spreading for years, take care.
