Rallying??

Has anyone experienced a rally thats lasted longer than a week? Hospice patient for 5 weeks. Classed as end of life. No chemotherapy for over 2 months as it had stopped working. All treatment stopped 11 days ago after blood work showed that they are most definately dying. Sleeping loads extremely confused and jaundice along with extreme fluid retention. No more blood tests, no more temp checks etc. Pain relief and sedatives only. 3 days after treatment removal they are suddenly sat up eating talking and generally feeling much better. 7 days later still here still eating still talking and planning on getting home as feeling better than ever. I've read about rallying but can it really last over a week? It's all become very confusing

  • Hello Christmascrazy, as a fellow terminal who goes to my local hospice, though i have not moved in, yet, and has many years in palliative care i came across rallying a few times and i can remember it lasting well over a week a few times, Good to hear your going home, please take care, Eddie

  • Hi thank you for your reply it's not me it's a family member and this is a whole new experience to me. No one seems to really know what's happening

  • Yes, it can last that long, and longer. My mother in law did the same for around 2 weeks. Looked the picture of health all things considered, but we were told it was temporary and were even warned about it before it first reared its head. She wasn't in for anything cancer related, just her general frailty and her heart and lungs. Even though we were warned about it, our brains still didn't quite process it because we were seeing someone that was more active than she was before she landed in hospital. As the nurses also warned, things changed quite quickly and dramatically during her last 2 days. Back was the unresponsive, unwell patient we had seen prior to her rally. Only this time, she didn't ever talk, eat or sit up again.

  • Hello Christmascrazy regarding rallying, "i am not an expert" the only theory i heard that made sense was when having cancer treatment, your bodies immune system as well as being weakened puts a lot into fighting the cancer, chemotherapy and other treatments, so when treatment stops it builds up again and can return to taking care of your body which gets a temporary boost, take care, Eddie
