What happens in the final weeks and days?

My Grandad is terminally ill with prostate cancer.. he is getting weaker by the day.. ive Searched online looking for a breakdown of what typically happens in the last few weeks and days regarding symptoms but i cant find a decent website or article that describes it clearly. I know its different for everyone but whats typical? His voice has started to get very weak is this an indication of how much time he has left? Hes having one ensure drink per day along with milk and water. No pain meds of any kind thankfully he has no pain.

  • Hi, sorry to hear you and your family are going through this very difficult time of your lifes.

I have lost my mom 1st December to cancer and then by chance stumbled on one instagram account 'HospiceNurseJulie' who has been looking after patients at the end of their life and is trying to educate people about death and what to expect through her experience. I highly recomend watching her videos as she talks about food intake, breathing, sleeping near to end of life as well as the energy rushes some people sometimes have and so much more.

I found it somehow comforting as it brought some answers to questions I didn't have at the time and that appeared afterwards and also clearly gave me this timeline of the events that followed. Was just bumped I did not know this at the time as it really can give you a timeframe of how much time is left, roughly of course.

I hope you will find this useful and Bless you and your Grandad. Stay Strong!

  • Thanks so much for your comment. Sadly my Grandad passed away on Friday. :(

    We are so devastated:(

  • I am so so deeply sorry for your loss :(

Just try keeping him healthy, smiling and happy in your thoughts - this helps me sometimes. I know it is really hard to do, at this very moment, as it is so very recent..... there is just no ONE right way of how all of this works I'm afraid.

I listen to a lot of grief podcasts on spotify, which I find helpful as I can relate a lot to similar experiences for people similar in age (as I am 33 and am a motherless daughter) (to mention a few 'grief sofa', 'not so linear')

There also is a HUGE grief community on instagram, with lots of advice and support.

I have recently also reached out to 'Let's talk about loss' community. It's for 18-35 young adults that lost a loved one. Sorry, I am just sharing what works for me - I do not know how old you are but am sure there is a community to support in your case as well. Talking to people that can relate, helps a lot.

Feel free to reach out to me, if you need anything at all, I would be happy to help.

Sending you my strength and best thoughts and prayers.. Bless you, your Grandad and your Family.
