What happens now?

My mother has only just been diagnosed with cancer, Stage 4.  She is more or less bed bound.  Has a catheter because the cancer was stopping her from peeing.  Can just about stand, but not unaided.  Eating very little.  Currently hospitalised but I think is being sent home next week.

She can't cope at home alone!  I live 200 miles away and although I plan to visit can't be there much due to work and family commitments.

I think she needs full-time care.  How does this happen?  I'm terrified she will be sent home and will be in pain, not able to cope and will only have carers in to attend to basic needs.

  • Hi Squibby,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your mother. This sounds really tough and I can of course totally understand your concerns. I'm not sure how much you have discussed things with her doctor, but do try to get all the information you can so you can understand what is required and what the next steps are, and also what you should expect. She should be provided with some sort of care plan and of course the appropriate care for her needs, so if you feel this isn't the case please raise your concerns with the team involved in her care.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses, and to get any advice from them such as available options and other things to consider for when your mother goes home. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
