Anxiety after doxetaxel chemo treatments

Hi, i have just turned 28.. was diagnosed with breast cancer in July and I have almost completed my chemotherapy sessions I have one more to go. I am currently having doxetaxel once every 3 weeks quite a high amount of it and after a few days I am suffering bad anxiety. Has anyone else experienced this after treatment ? I could be thinking nothing then suddenly my heart races and then I'm overthinking about that then so on and it's a vicious circle. This anxiety can go on for 9 days after treatment or even more and it's so bad I can't sit down I'm constantly walking around to try an ease my mind onto something else. Nothing works. Reading, watching tv, crosswords , exercise my head just takes over I have spoke with my gp and he advised because I'm almost there with treatment to hold tight and not take any medication for now. I'd rather not either. It's getting so bad that I have passed a massage over to my consultant asking if he will let me off my last chemo and just do opp earlier. Please can anyone advise me.

  • Hi h Marie. I'm in a similar situation to you. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in june and am currently on docetaxel, last round this week. I don't think I've really had anxiety but I do feel a lot more depressed on this one compared to the other one(can't remember the name!). I get really emotional about the littlest thing now and I feel low nearly every day. Have you thought about antidepressants, they might help with your anxiety. I've got some but admittedly, I forget to take them. But when I do, they take the edge off. When will you be having your surgery? I'm seeing my surgeon 3rd December and I could be having it 4 - 6 weeks after, I'm so nervous!

  • Hi thanks for your reply. I have spoke about medication with my gp and he suggests I wait u until treatment ends as I'm quite anxious about taking new medications too ‍♀️

I'm seeing my surgeon on the 1st December and they are looking to get me in before Xmas hopefully. I spoke with my oncologist yesterday and he said he will lower my last dose of chemo by 20% so hopefully that will reduce the side effect I get (anxiety) or at least won't be so bad hopefully.

  • That makes sense, I was nervous about taking the antidepressants too. Hopefully them reducing your chemo will make a difference and its good that they're going to try. Good luck with the rest of your journey, I hope your anxiety gets better too

  • Thanks I hope all goes well for you too

hopefully we get the all clear and maybe then we can see a light at the end of the tunnel which might perk us up a little x

  • Absolutely! I really want to be told 'all clear' and 'no further treatment needed'! I know it sounds strange, but I think it'll be a bit weird when it's all over. I've got so used to my life being mainly about hospitals and tests lol. I saw my consultant today and apparently my surgeon wants to do the op at the beginning of January. I'm freaking out! How do you feel about yours? If you don't mind me asking

  • Hi again, well I've been told my opp is some time before Xmas and origionally it was going to be January. I'm quite excited as it's closer to the results but I'm also nervous which is pretty normal with any opp I guess. . Just imagine when we wake up we will hopefully be cancer free we will feel like a new woman hopefully lol ! Xxx
