Breast Cancer as a Teenager

I suppose the title says it all, but I am fourteen and have been diagnosed with breast cancer; I have also have been told that they cannot operate until 16, or perform a mammogram until 16 either... fighting a losing battle against my own body I suppose?

  • Hi, sorry to hear this, you are very young to be diagnosed with BC, can you tell me how this was diagnosed? im not a dr but i believe its not possible to diagnose BC without a Mammogram, or a Biopsy, how was it found? even if you have a noticable lump it would need to be taken out or biopsied to have an accurate diagnosis, im very confused as to why they wont operate or do a Mammogram?....breast cancer must be treated immediately, its very unwise to wait so i dont get why this is the case for you....can you give more information? all the best to you.

    Hi Destiny,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear about your worries. It must be especially hard for you when you don't see your mum. What a pity that your sisters laughed at you when you told them. Are they older than you? Because of your age, it is quite possible that there is nothing to worry about. Cancer is more often found in older people, although not always. At your age your body is changing all the time and you will be having a lot of hormonal changes.

Would I be right in saying that your periods have already started? It is quite normal for our breasts to feel sore from time to time throughout our lives. Breast cancer is seldom accompanied by pain. Most people who are diagnosed are not aware of any pain at all. Again, rules are made to be broken and we are not all the same, so there are exceptions to every rule. It is common for our breasts to feel sore just before and during our periods. However, since you've noticed that your nipples are inverted, it wouldn't do any harm to let your GP examine  your breasts, just to make sure.

Can you tell your dad that you need to see your GP? I understand that it is difficult to raise this with your dad and that he may feel a little out of his depth with woman's problems, but I'm sure that he will still support you fully. The other way that you could approach this is to have a chat with one of your school teachers. You may not think that they are used to dealing with personal health problems, but with so many broken families nowadays, they deal with a lot more than just teaching.

I don't know whether your GP is a gentleman or a lady. If you feel it would be less embarrassing for you, you can always ask to be seen by a lady doctor when you make your appointment.

If there is anything nasty, the sooner it is seen to the better the outcome usually is, so don't delay. Do please try and raise the subject with your dad and get things checked out, if only for your own peace of mind.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, i'm 15 and i've recently noticed a lump that's move able, kind of above my right breast area/chest area. However I have no symptoms or anything but I'm getting worried however I have done research and it could be a cyst? But i'm not sure what to do

  • Hi Littllequeen,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

At your age it is most unlikely that this is anything sinister. However, we are always advised to get any changes in our breasts investigated. Have you spoken to your mum about this?

Between you, the best thing to do would be to get it checked out with your GP. At your age, there will be a number of hormonal changes taking place and this is the most likely cause. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you!! I'll keep you updated but that has helped a lot and made me less stressed. Thank you once again x

    Hi Littlequeen,

I am glad to hear that my reply has helped. Try to get an appointment with your GP as soon as you can, then you can put your mind to rest.

I look forward to your update.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Littlequeen,

The best thing to do is to have a chat with your mum and then to see your GP. It is good news that your lump is moveable, as most sinister lumps tend to be immovamle and ragged at the edges.

It could well be a cyst, but the only way to be sure is to have some tests.

I sincerely hope that this comes back as good news for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Update- good news actually, the "lump" seems to feel the slightest bit smaller? And it's more sort of move able than before

    Hi Littlequeen,

I am delighted to hear this. It might still be advisable to check things out with your GP before just leaving this.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
