Mum died 3 days ago from infection, I feel so lost

So a year ago my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer. She had surgery to remove 3/4 of her lung which was hugely successful and the cancer had successfully been cleared by november of the same year. A year later (september 2019) they found that it had come back in her lymph nodes and started her on chemo and radiation therapy. Shed only had 3 chemo appointments and on up until saturday night shed felt absolutely fine. On saturday night literally within an hour she collapsed in my house and couldnt talk or move as she had no strength. She was rushed to hospital with the paramedics saying itll probably just be a blood pressure issue. I then find out in the morning she had passed away as her white blood count was at 0 and she had got neutropenic sepsis. I turned 21 two days before this happened and I just cant understand and accept that it has happened. She was the strongest women I have ever met and had so much fight in her I just dont understand how it could happen that suddenly and none of the doctors picked up that her blood count was so low.

If anyone has had a similar experience I would love to hear from you and i just need someone to talk to, I dont know how I'm going to get through the rest of my life without my mum and best friend.

  • Hi,

I lost my mum 2 and a half weeks ago to neutropenic sepsis. She had breast cancer with Mets to her bones and liver, and had been on oral chemo for 3 weeks. Took her shopping on the Thursday night, Friday she wasnt feeling well and got taken to hospital. By Sunday morning she was gone. I'm so sorry for what you have gone through, it is absolutely devastating and unbelievable at times :( x
