Dad passed away today

Hi everyone,

I have this evening had a phone call from my sister in Canada to say Dad passed away this morning. He had a really good day on Sunday but went downhill very rapidly today. I feel in one sense glad he is no longer suffering the pain of the cancer in his bones but also very sad that I never really got to know him as much as I would have liked and that I will never be able to talk tim again. We only met each other for the months holiday when we went to stay with him 23 years ago. I am also very proud to be his son.

My sister sounded very upset and said she will miss him very much. It's hard for me not being there to support my brothers and sisters, Brian.

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks Kim, Netty, Sue, Max, Lucie, Jo, and River. You are all so kind, especially as you all have so much going on in your own lives. I have a little story I love to tell which I would love to share with you all

When dad was driving us through Calgary 23 years ago, Mrs B said "You two, your so alike; you walk the same and even talk the same". A lot of other people has already made similar comments. Anyway, my dad had the car radio on, tuned into a country music station. The very next song was one by the singer/ songwriter, Paul Overstreet and the song was called "Seeing my father in me" and the words included "I walk the way he walks, I even talk the way he talks". It was almost creepy and next day I bought the cassette tape and that song is now one of my favorite songs. I will always remember that day and whenever I hear that song will think of my dad.

I have regrets that I didnt listen to Mrs B years earlier when she wanted to find dad but at least I got to meet him (and my three sisters and two brothers in Canada) albeit for just a month. I will always remember him as a fun loving person who loved to tease. Thats where I get it from I guess.

Thanks again ladies. your kind words and thoughts means so much, both to me and Mrs B and will I know help me get through this painful time, Brian.

  • Hi Brian.......gosh that is a very strange coincidence Brian and really makes you wonder if somehow things in life are kind of mapped out for us in some way or another. It is a lovely moment to remember of something you and your Dad were able to share together. Sending you a hug x

  • Brian, please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your Dad. Thank you for sharing that special visit your had with him when the radio played that song. What a good memory you have in knowing that you and he had so much likeness and so special for Mrs. B. to tell you that. I wish you peace at this very sad time.

  • Dear Brian, thank you for sharing your story. It certainly is a strange coincidence about the song playing on the radio at that time. I hope it's a comfort to hear the song and think about that visit to Canada to meet your dad and siblings. I'm sure you've said it before, how a song can take us back to a moment in time.

Your likenesses to,your dad (the way you walk and talk, plus your fun loving personality) just goes to show that family traits certainly do get passed down the generations! And as for the 'teasing' trait, your stories about your son and grandson really show this to be the case!

    Take care lovely Brian.

Sending supportive thoughts and hugs to you and Mrs B.

    Jo xx

  • Good morning folks,

Thanks Jo and Dave for your kind words. I had a long chat with my sister In Canada last evening and when I told her about that song, she said if she can get hold of the song she may try and get it included in the service for my dad which is next Tuesday as she loved it and said my other brothers and sisters would too.

Thanks again to you all, Brian

  • Hi Brian

How lovely that after a chat with your sister in Canada and mentioning that special song, she will try to include it in the service for your Dad. I know that you will all be thinking of each other no matter how many miles there are between you. Sending warm regards and wishing you a peaceful weekend.Jules x

  • Hi Jules,

Thanks for your lovely reply. Though I only met dad and my brothers and sisters for four weeks, I have lots of wonderful memories which I truley treasure, thanks again, Brian.

  • Hi everyone,

Just had an e-mail from my sister and she has found that song I spoke about and she is including it in the service on Tuesday. She is also going to read out the e-mail I sent as she says this way I can feel I am part of the service. This is so good of her and I really appreciate it for a part of me want to be there to help support them all. She has also sent me copies of what she has put in the various local papers regarding dads death and a copy of the order of service. Thanks again, everyone, Brian

  • Hi Brian

I am so pleased for you that the special piece of music is to be included in your Dad's service and though you will be a good few miles away I know you will be with all the family in your thoughts.  Having been sent copies of the 'notices' by your sister you will have felt included by your Canadian family which I hope will bring you some comfort. Thinking of you and Mrs B as always.Jules x

  • Hi Jules,

Thanks for your kind words. I was really pleased with what my sister is doing as it is making me feel not so isolated. You are so right when you say I will be there with them in thoughts.

Take care and thanks again, Brian.
