Mum died yesterday

just as the title says, my beautiful, wonderful mother died yesterday night. she’d been in a long, long battle with a very rare type of cancer, and had recently gotten flu and blood clots in her lungs on top of that, and everything just came to a head and she passed whilst holding my hand.

i have absolutely no idea what to do now. i feel like everything has changed, and yet the world is operating like nothing has. i’m 23, she was 60, she’s going to miss out on so much of my life — i haven’t even graduated yet, i was so desperately hoping she’d get to see me do that.

we were so close, she’s left me so many lovely messages, we said i love you and goodnight and good morning every single day over text. it already hurt waking up to silence this morning. i just… i have no idea what to do. how does anyone do this? is it just going to keep hitting me like a freight train over and over again? i cant sleep, im struggling to eat, even drinking is hard and im crying so much i have headaches.

i just need some help. i already miss her so much. i cant do this without her

  • Hello trapped and welcome,

I wanted to say on behalf of the Cancer Chat team how sorry I am to hear of your mother's passing. Please know that how you're feeling is natural after losing such an important person in your life. Grief is a very personal experience, so it's important to acknowledge these feelings and be kind to yourself by allowing yourself the space and time to process what's happened and take this a day at a time. It sounds like you were very close and, while I can only imagine how much you miss her, I hope knowing that her last moments were with you can provide comfort in some way. While grief is an experience unique to each person, it doesn't mean that you should go through it alone. Don't be afraid to lean on those close to you who could be key in helping you through this and there are organisations you can contact if you ever wish to talk to someone.

Cruse Bereavement Support for example have a helpline on 0808 808 1677 as well as local services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland that may be near you. You will find all their information in the link. We also have guidance around coping with grief on our website, which you can refer to at anytime. This forum is also hear for you whenever you need it.

My condolences to you at this difficult time.
