My mum has small cell lung cancer and has months to live..

Hello everyone,

I am so numb with sadness. My wonderful mum (she is 75) is dying with this dreadful disease. She went to the doctors with a swollen shoulder in September. After been sent for scans she was diagnosed with this horrible condition, which if you read up on has a devastating prognosis. My mum started chemo which had a positive effect, and even shrunk the tumour in her lung (cancer had spread to her ribs and small spots in her liver). Then she was put on Immunotherapy which not only didn’t work for her, but also aggravated the cancer making it triple in size and spread all throughout her body. We am totally devastated and heartbroken. She is so brave and strong. She has been told she won’t see Easter. The long goodbye is like torture seeing her pain increase. She never complains and still hopes for a miracle. Her sister has only just passed with liver cancer too. I have started to grieve already as I know there is only pain and loss ahead. I’m so sorry if my post is painful for those who have this aggressive disease. We need a world wide funding program for lung cancer to give the people with it a fighting change. There needs to be hope to carry us through. Wishing everyone a good prognosis who has cancer at this time xxx

  • Thank you so much for replying Steph. Xx

  • Hi Nicky  I am so sorry to hear about your Mom.  It is such a sad and heartbreaking time for you and your family.  I too have secondary cancer which cannot be cured.  I don't think any of us who have this awful disease truly know how long we have left and just take one day at a time.  Sometimes I think it is harder for our loved ones to go through this than living with it yourself.  Your Mom is truly lucky to have a daughter who loves and supports her so much.  We are all here for you if you want to chat. x

  • Thank you so much for your reply, you are very kind. I had cancer myself in 2023 but was very lucky as stage 1 womb cancer which was cured by surgery. Sometimes I feel guilty because my journey was relatively straightforward and didn’t involve chemo, which is very tough. My moms sister has just passed with liver cancel and a good friend of mine has terminal cancer too. It’s just a very sad time where cancer it taking all the people I love. My mom is so brave, and at 75 she is grateful of the time she has had on this small rock in space! I’m sorry to hear about your cancer. I hope they can manage it for many years to come. Sending love, and hugs and of course a huge amount of hope xxxxx
