Advanced NSCLC palliative steroid care

OH advanced NSCLC and last week handed over to hospice and palliative care only

Has been given steroids and oh my, the difference.  4 days in there is less mucus, better appetite and its fab!  OK so the breathlessness is there but he can manage that with morph, oxygen and pacing

Our question is -  is there a huge fall coming after this high?   They said it was for a short time,   and he probably hasn't got months and months ahead, but you know in your gut that this is only masking things!

Any advice greatly received

  • I'm really pleased the steroids have had such a good impact on your OH Snoopy6691. It must be wonderful to see your OH with an appetite and a bit more energy again.

Your husband's palliative care team should be able to answer your questions about the steroids but I hope this discussion that was started on the forum last year will help as well.

I hope you hear back from some of our our members soon but if you'd like to get to speak with our cancer nurses about this, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi Snoopy6691,

Just wanted to say, I am in a similar situation to you. Husband has mesothelioma,  has been having chemo, then immunotherapy now chemo again. He has lost so much weight, he is frail and aged 10 years.

We have a scan next week, and have reached the point where we are thinking no more chemo. But we will await the scan results.

When he had a 20 day course of steroids a few months ago, they really boosted his well being and appetite,  we came to think of them as magic drugs!  I think there was a fall afterwards, that's the problem because then it's all back to the symptoms. I know long term steroids can do harm, but at this stage for us I dont think it matters that much...so I am going to ask for him to have a course so that he may start to recover a bit and regain his appetite.  Quality of life is what matters most for us.

Wishing you and your OH the very best

  • Evening Minniepippa

    Thanks for the reply

The Palliative Dr called today and when she said there were side effects I did reply "worse than all the symptoms they have removed this last week?"    We agree with you, at this late stage an appetite, feeling better and a better quality of life is what we're all after

She's told him to reduce from 4mg a day to 2mg next Thurs and see how that goes. Also given us signs to look out for and report if we see them.

We've booked another Sunday lunch and our kids are coming over on Friday (Don lives about 3 hrs away so don't see him much) do that's going to cheer us both up!

Going to have the money discussion   , funeral discussion and the "what mums going to do when she's on her own" discussion so they both know from him what he wants to happen.  I'm 55 so he wants me to travel, live life and just not to "hook up with any loser who just wants your money "     Honestly   he's a one!!!!!  Still laughing and being inappropriate

Hope the scan results aren't as bad as feared for you both.  It's horrible just waiting so chin up xxxx
