Ascites - please help

Hi , I'm after some advise really - or if anyone has been in a similar situation .

My mother in law has stage 4 bowel cancer which has spread to the liver it's been 2 years since she has been diagnosed but up until recent we have seen abit of a decline , in January she had fluid build up in her tummy which she had drained and it returned in may in which she had the drain again , however the fluid quickly came back this time and now the hospital have said there are too many pockets of fluid to drain as it will be too dangerous for her . The problem is the ascites is causing her not to eat without being sick and she's barely drinking anything , she also has Edema in her legs and feet which is stopping her being mobile and active , is there anything that can be done to make her as comfortable as possible ? At the minute it's really dragging her down and making her miserable . Any advise would be greatly appreciated . Is a permenant drain an option?

has anyone been through a situation similar  ? I hate seeing her so down

Any help welcomed - thanks

  • Hi Stella and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm very sorry that your mother in law has declined recently and has been contending with ascites. It sounds like she's in a very difficult situation at the moment but I hope some of our members who have experience of this will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice.

If you'd like to have a chat about this with one of our cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I really hope you're able to find a solution and are able to make things more manageable for her soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi stella, ive come across your post by accident looking for info on my dad. Its as if i wrote your post. My dad has stage 4 bowel cancer which at the point of diagnosis had already spread to his liver. Diagnosed in september 2020 although the tests started in the January but lockdown meant the full diagnosis took 9 months! My dad was never offered treatment and was given an average of 1 year. Up until recently hes been my normal beautiful dad but a month ago he had malignant ascites drained 5 litres, the whole lot was back the very next day and is getting worse every day. Hes stopped eating (wont say why) not drinking much at all and i know the fluid is also now in his chest as his discharge letter mentioned it. He is short of breath, his voice seems to have changed as if he has a sore throat and is coughing more. I have phoned his GP to say i feel its cruel to leave him like this and she told me its just part of the dying process and there is nothing they can do except to drain it again but that is pointless for a few hours relief. I feel so helpless, he lives alone, has never once complained and wont even take a paracetamol, wont have carers, nothing. I believe he is powering through to protect me. Ive bought him a bed to try get him to come stay at mine but he wont. I just dont know what else to do. Recently hes stopped watching tv too and often just lies in bed in silence,  its just so sad. I hope your mother in  law is ok and if you got anything sorted for her please share it with me. Water tablets are not allowed for my dad as they are affecting his kidney function. I also wondered if a permanent drain was an option for some relief xx

  • So sorry to hear about your mother-in-law's suffering with ascites.

Is there a palliative care team you can access? In my experience they are available in hospital and in the community (for eg home visits & calls). I'm being supported by a community palliative care team that operate from our local hospice and they are wonderful. Palliative care focusses on symptom control and it seems to me your MIL would really benefit from an assessment by them.

I'm currently suffering with ascites too. I have inoperable advanced bile duct cancer that has spread to my liver, peritoneum and ovaries. A couple of weeks ago I had 10 litres of ascitic fluid drained in hospital (the volume was a shock to say the least)! I am having a permanent drain fitted on Wednesday so the fluid doesn't build up like that again.
