Looking after dad with palliative care

Dad has bowel cancer metastasis to the liver. It is untreatable. He can have a stent in his bowel when he has worse symptoms. Ive been told when hes sick, constipated and in pain. He has been sick a few times in the last month. Hes never been 'regular' anyway. Hes so stubborn he won't admit if hes in pain. Hes ate most of his tea today and then threw it back up. He then wanted a whisky!

I dont know when its right to call the consultant for a stent. How often hes sick is right for the call?

He doesnt want help from a care team as he associates them with the hospice where 'you never come out!' I don't know what to do for the best.

  • Hello Purplefairy1,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. It must be really hard for you on a daily basis and I am sure your dad very much appreciates your support. I hope you manage to carve a little bit of time for yourself at the moment I imagine it isn't easy. We have information on our website here on taking care of yourself when looking after someone with cancer.

I think given the fact that your dad has been sick on several occasions, it would be a good idea to give the consultant a call and discuss this. They will I am sure have the expertise to tell you more about whether now is a good time to consider a stent. If you don't manage to get through to them immediately, perhaps you could give the GP a call and ask for advice on how to get in touch with the specialist - it is important though that a doctor is aware that your dad has been sick.

I hope you manage to speak to someone soon. If you'd like to talk to our nurses about this, you can also ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call.

Best wishes to you and your dad,
