Mum has just been diagnosed with lung cancer

Hi all

I'm sure this is one of the more usual posts on this forum, but i am just looking for some advice.

My 59 year old mum has just been diagnosed with lung cancer, and I am feeling such a mixture of feelings. She was admitted to hospital on Saturday, after feeling really unwell for sometime. The CT scan showed she has cancer in one of her lungs, which has not yet spread (thankfully).

Does anyone have any advice firstly on how to support her through this? Given the COVID situation I haven't managed to see her in person yet. The rest of the results are due in a couple of weeks.

Any secondly, does anyone have any advice (from a selfish perspective) on how to cope myself? I'm desperately trying to remain positive but I just feel so hopeless right now, and also very anxious. Even sleeping and eating are proving really hard right now, and i'm trying not to google symptoms as I know often these are really worst case scenarios.

Thanks all!

  • I have just had a lung cancer diagnosis a few hours ago, being on my own I rang Macmillian cancer care.  They provide support for families of cancer suffers not just the person with cancer.  02890708610. I am dreading telling my children especially my youngest daughter in law and their little boy, especially hard with this covid.

  • I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me, thank you so much.

Wishing you all the luck and love for your journey, i hope you get the treatment that you need. x

  • Thank you, hope your Mum comes through.  You always think it will never happen to you.  I am sitting here on my fourth vodka worrying about my family and my pets.  Just waiting to hear when I can go for tests.   It will be how it is supposed to be, but at the moment that is no consolation.  Do ring Macmillian they are sending me loads of leaflets about how to talk to your family about this devasting news.  Let's hope this time next year we will all be smiling.
