Prostate cancer in the bone

Hi there

I send my hopeful thoughts to you all.

for us its been rocky the last two years, dad had a long drawn out diagnosis to eventually be told he has prostate cancer that was also present in lymph and bone, after six sessions of chemo and hormone treatment he’s now  got some advanced bone cancer. (My father in law died from this 11 years ago and from diagnosis to death it was 5 months). My dad was due to start a trial but covid has stopped that. He’s 82, living in isolation and totally dependent on me. I’ve just lost my mum to MND four months ago. After speaking to his oncologist today on a phonecall only who wasn’t very helpful she said his PSA is 0.4 but the cancer is the aggressive version but she was puzzled as his PSA was so low. She can only offer him more tablets and possibly more chemo down the line. I’m on here to just reach out as I feel confused, helpless and every time I ask his oncologist for some real information she says ‘leave the worrying to us and enjoy your life’ but without anything solid to move forward with that’s very tough. 

I would just like to hear from anyone with their stories as I need to know what could be in store for him/us.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community LauraLouise although I'm sorry to read what you and your dad have, and are, going through. It sounds very tough, especially with the loss of your mum, for which you have my sincerest and heartfelt condolences.

    Hi,Sorry about your situation,i have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and I had a bone scan to see if it had spread,they found 2 hot spots on ribs,so I had to have a CT scan,it was not too clear so I'm having another next week.If it as not spread to bones i can just watch and monitor it ,if it has spread it would mean surgery or hormone therapy & chemo.Its a real worry for you but you must be strong for your dad.The PSA is really low,mine was 15, i can't really advise you with not being as far down the line as your dad's situation.I thought I had problems but when I read these post it makes me very humble. We all must soldier on.Best wishes to u and your dad.Stay strong.

    Thank you for your kind words and I wish you all the best. This whole process is extremely humbling I agree. It’s been very up and down with treatment, he’s had his chemo, hormone treatment is continuing and was due to do a trial that has now been cancelled unfortunately and he’s starting a new drug this week

    Keeping dads mental state in a happy place is the most important of all this process I agree. I don’t discuss anything deep unless he chooses to. Although discussing his wishes is always very important too. Each day holds new moments and hope. Bless you. It’s a tricky time at present for all cancer patients. I wish you well.

    I've been living with prostate cancer gone to lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung was diagnosed Feb 2016 PSA 1581 .    After starting on hormone therapy then chemo it fell to 0.3 after two years then rose slowly to 6 over next two years till Feb last year when it started rising to, 85 over six months so I was put on stronger hormone therapy its now 0.6 last blood test still dropping for first three years I was still working ,(metal fabrication and welding) had to retire when my darling wife was diagnosed with Altzimers and Parkinson's I'm now her official carer.

    We have other carer's come to help like washing her and odd things rest I do.some times its a struggle.

    Hope treatment works what ever they do.
