Why hasn't my Dad been offered treatment or a diagnosis?

My 63 year old Dad was diagnosed with possible Lung Cancer at the end of November 2020. A few days later he collapsed & he was taken into the Oncology department in Leeds. Because of Covid I couldn’t see him & it was difficult speaking to anyone. I did speak to a doctor who said they had done a MRI & found over 27 Brian mets & this is why he had collapsed at home & is now paralyzed down one side of his face. He was granted a fast-track discharge with palliative care as they said he was too unwell for treatment & the chance of treatment working would be slim. He is now at home & on a NJ feed machine with carers coming in 4 times a day. He has been at home now for over a month & he hasn’t deteriorated like they said he would. He is in a lot of pain but apart from that he can talk walk with a frame & shave etc. A family member asked why he hadn’t been given Immunotherapy to which I couldn’t answer. He never had any formal diagnosis apart from what they saw on a CT scan which was a 2.5 cm tumor & a possible growth on his Adrenal gland, but they did say they wasn’t sure whether that was a tumor which had spread from his Lung. They did say that the cancer was non curable & aggressive because they didn’t pick the Lung tumor up on the MRI scan he had at the beginning of 2020. However that is slightly misleading because they found what they referred to as scaring on the lung on the MRI hence the need for CT scan later that year which was postponed due to Covid.

I am wondering now why they haven’t suggested Immunotherapy & could they have got the diagnosis wrong because he hasn’t had a biopsy?

  • Hello bflare

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. It's obviously a difficult time for you all.

Does your Dad have an appointment arranged with the palliative care team or do you have a number to contact them on? They would be best placed to try and answer some of your questions as they should have more information to hand about your Dad's condition.

Alternatively, you're welcome to give our team of nurses a call who will be able to talk things through with you and maybe answer some of your questions. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monda to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi bflare,

im so sorry to hear about your dads lung cancer diagnosis. Often lung cancer can go undetected and isn't found until it has spread. My grandad is currently battling stage 4 lung cancer which has spread throughout his lymphatic system, and the only reason we found out was due to a raised lymph node in his neck. To this day he has absolutely no symptoms of lung cancer and looks fit and healthy (and feels it too).
If I were you id ring your dads GP and ask them to clarify what is going on and ask why he hasn't been offered any treatment or follow up care. In my experience my grandad has a cancer nurse specialist who is our first point of contact. In regards to immunotherapy maybe he has not been offered it as it is not the right treatment for him. Again with my grandad they had to do a gene mutation which determined what kind of treatment was suitable for him. We did think immunotherapy would be a possibility, but after tests we found out chemo was the only thing suitable.
I can only imagine how upset and frustrated you and your dad must be, you could always speak to Macmillan if your struggling. I know they can't give you answers but they can definitely help. Sending lots of love x
