Comfortable Chair for brother, just diagnosed for 3rd time

I am new to the page and althought i myself am not being treated for Cancer My Brother John has been diagnosed for the third time in 15 years.

I Know what he has to go through whilst going through the treatment and i am hoping  if it is ok for me to ask a question in regards to his care.

One of the ways i can help him is in that he knows due to previous treatments that he will spend a lot of time sitting and his idea is to sit in his bedroom which is downstairs for long periods of time, save him struggling walking.

We live on the Isle of Man and one thing we are short of over here is furniture shops. He is trying to find a comfortable chair to sit in for long periods of time and as i say there are not many shops that sell chairs that he can try out.

Would anyone be able to advise me through themselves or a relative/friend a chair (not leather) that would be comfortable enough for him. We can order from the UK which is not a problem.

Thank you for reading my post

  • Hi berty.

Recliner ones are handy because of relaxing more than just sitting alot of the time, you can also get air cushions, just for the seat or all the chair bottom and back which help to keep away sores and such, or maybe think about a massage one.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

  • Hello berty61,

l know where you are coming from with this, having previously spent way too long stuck in chairs. The thing l found that l was stuck in one facing position and had difficulty reaching things around me,so had you considered having a swivelling reclining chair, but ensure you get one that locks the swivel easily in position for getting in and out of,just a thought.

l understand the limitations of island life, but also appreciate the upsides, living as l do on the Outer Hebrides, and remember your island with great affection from my days spent on fast moving two wheels, the images burnt strongly on my mind, its a very special place,

  • Hi there, I bought a real sheepskin from Amazon for my stage 4 cancer husband, this really helped him even though we had a recliner, he didn't get pressure points and I also laid it under him in his bed, you can just buy large squares so it doesn't have to be a full sized one.  Hope this helps, best wishes, Carol

  • Hi Carol and thank you so much for your help and advice.

  • Hi David

i will mention this to him and his wife also all other advice, this page is so helpful, lovely people.

To be honest i love island and its little shops and way of life and would never change it. I love the TT i colect all the memorabilia and hopefully one day they will open a TT Museum where i can donate it to.

  • how did u get a chair i need one my backs hurts and can't sleep its my 3rd time fighting brain cancer

  • Hi Roxy.  I'm sorry about your situation but you could ask someone to help you find one. So you want a recliner chair?  Lots of furniture stores do them but they are expensive. Carol

  • Hello Roxy126822

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with brain cancer for the third time.

Do you have a specialist nurse? I'd certainly speak to them in the first instance. It may be that they can refer you to the local occupational therapy department to arrange a seating assessment. Or they may have access to other services that can support you with this.

Alternatively, you can contact your GP or local Social Services department, again to ask for a referral to the Occupational therapy team. There's some information on the Macmillan website which you may find helpful.

I'd also suggest getting in touch with The Red Cross as they have equipment available to hire in many areas of the UK. You might also like to have a look at the information on the NHS website about household equipment.

I hope that you're able to access the services you need quickly and that they can make things more comfortable for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Roxy,

My husband had kidney cancer and had to have it removed. He is now on dialysis 3 days weekly.

We were put in touch with Kidney Care by his renal team, and they will pay up to 1k for a comfortable recliner, leather/material, with no cost to you. We just had to find a reputable site, (we chose Argos) which they could see for themselves as the funds are paid to them and not directly to you. When your application has been approved, your chair can be delivered within a week.

The longest time in the whole process, was that we couldn't find what WE wanted. Everything on Kidney Care side was a smooth transaction.

Do you have a Social Worker or any support team to guide you in the right direction? It's worth finding out as recliners can work out to be costly.

    Hope this helps?

    All the best x
