Confused about palliative chemotherapy

In late 2019 my father had an operation to remove his lung because of a large tumour. He had a scan in the beginning of 2020 but Then lockdown happened and all appointments were cancelled. Last week the hospital finally called and basically his cancer has spread and there is nothing more they can do for him. They are now talking of palliative chemotherapy, I dont understand what this is going to entail? My mother fought brest cancer 2 years ago and after surgery and chemo she made a full recovery. Her chemotherapy made her really ill, will this be the same for my dad? How long do people recieve palliative chemotherapy before they pass? We want to prepare for him and make sure hes happy in his final days but we have no idea how long that may be. It's an unusual cancer so they do not know how long he may have. I just want to understand more about what to expect when he starts. Is there any chance he could make a recovery? Will it spoil his quality of life? Will he be too sick to do the things he wants or should we plan? I'm so confused and to be honest terrified of what's going to happen. I want to help the best I can so any advice would be great. Thank you.

  • Hi

Remember I'm a cancer patient, not medicaly trained so might get things wrong, but going by others on forum and my own experience..

Palliative chemo is when the treatment has a chance to slow down or shrink the tumors but can't get rid completely making quality of life better, it can also depend where the tumours are in relation to how much the chemo helps.

Sorry your going through this we know it can effect the family and friends as much as the patient.

    Hope I've helped a little.

    Best wishes.

  • Hello I am on "palliative" chemotherapy thats what they say.But I am thinking its as a normal chemo.people witj stage 4 can go in to remission.I a. Having this chemo weekly since August 2019.I have Breast cancer spread in my lungs, this chemo managed to clear my kidney and liver. So my only cancer now is my lungs and my latest scan last week chemo still shrinking the nodules.

People soon as they are told palliative they thinking of death in 1 or 2 months.I have asked my doctor what if this chemo stops working she said then I will have chemotherapy in pills. So if one thing stops they should able to offer you another thing.

I am staying positive most of the time and I am feeling so well I have even returned to work 2x week.
