CANCER DOESN’T STOP FOR COVID.

Hi all,

sorry but this is a bit of a long rant on how cancer patients seem to have been but on the back burner since Covid 19.. my mum was diagnosed with endometrial cancer stage 1a so early on back at the start of March.

I seem to be more concerned than my mum but then hearing that my mum was diagnosed with it you always seem to think the worst.

She was fitted with the implant for what was supposed to be 12 weeks as seemingly this is a method they test when it's early on.. fast forward her 12 weeks and nothing, no appointment or contact from hospital.... it's now week 15 and I made her call to find out what's happening with her appointment, to which she gets told oh sorry the Dr dealing with your case has left and you should hear from your new Dr in about 4 weeks time... That will be a full 7 weeks late from when she was supposed to be seen.

Is this the Norm ? I thought maybe I'm just really peeved off at the situation as it seems like they don't care cause seemingly Covid is the only killer at the moment!. I'm I being unreasonable or should she have been seen long ago?.

and I know the strain is immense on NHS and Emergency services as my partner is a theatre scrub nurse and myself a firefighter, but I still don't think that's a fair excuse for the period of time that will have passed since her original appointment to find out if it's gotten worse or not.

  • Hi Firefighter.

Sometimes you have to chase everything up or nothing is done.. I should have had an oncologist appointment end of last year. My wife was not very well and concentrating on her, when i realised it was February and not herd anything so phoned up told Dr had left so new one still sorting patients out, got appointment next day in afternoon so in morning had to get blood tests done and hope results in. Three months later still nothing again so get blood tests done then phone up appointment next day again luckily blood results in, unluckily cancer decided to bite. So scans and blood tests again.

Everything done and waiting decided to phone up find things out appointment arranged September so i say could i be pushed in this month with it just being results they say they will get back to me going to get results week on Friday, so it pays to phone up and push them a bit. Good luck with your mother, please keep on at them to get things going again..

  • Hello I agree with Billygoat you have to push push and even complain.

I.havr stage 4 breast cancer I have lymphoedema in my right arm which hurts.I was referred to a specialist clinic since January I got finally appt for March!!!!One week before appt they cancelled it because of Covid. So I called my nurse she said she will find out if i can go to a different hospital.Well the lazy woman - my nurse she never called back.So i am still suffering and loosing mobility in my arm.In June I wrote a complain letter about the uncaring attitude of my nurse and doctor because my onco told.me that clinic will never open again!!!!!But they didnt bother to let me know. And guess what after the letter I got a phone call from another hospital and I finally can get sorted my arm this Monday. Its disquisting how the cancer patients beeing dumped.

So you have to fight for your mum.

    Denise

  • Thank you for your replies BillyGoat & Denise,

it really means a lot that you have both taking time out to reply.

Its such a horrible thing Cancer. I will get her to call again on Monday and tell her to just keep annoying them until they get something sorted. It's very poor of the NHS that it's got to this point.

Denise my mum also suffers from lymphoedema however hers is in both her lower legs. She also struggles with mobility. .

it genuinely does feel like cancer patients are being hung out to dry. It's not right and something needs to be done! It's not fair on patients to have to chase the hospital up! :(

I really wish you both a full recovery.

    Kieran.
