My dad has advanced prostrate cancer

hi everyone.

My dad was diagnosed with prostrate cancer December 2019, he's had loads of hospital appointments, he's having hormone treatment, radiology, he had tablets to take at nighttime,

When he was diagnosed he had cancer in his prostrate that had spread to his shoulder, it's since spread to his bones, its now in both his shoulders, his spine, and hips, he finds it very hard to walk he shuffles with a stick, he can't have showers any longer as his balance isn't very good but with help can have a bath, he was in tramadol as well as pain killers but he's now having to take morphine, he's got stage 4 advanced

Can anyone please help and advise, I don't know what the next stage is. Thanks

  • Hi michelle ,

I've got advanced stage 4 prostate gone to lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and a lung diagnosed Feb 2016 on permanent hormone therapy and cemotherapy when neaded. I'm classed as palliative care.

If your father still wants to use shower, you can get plastic or aluminium stools and grab rails for support.

My psa was 1581 when diagnosed just living with my uninvited guest.

I've got handrails around the house nice and solid so proper support were ever i can. And commode near bed and living room chair.. Not sure anything else but I'll keep thinking.

    Good luck with your father.

    Billy

  • Thanks Billy, I'm sorry to hear your suffering too.

When dad was diagnosed his psa was 3000.

I'm speak with my mam about getting a chair or a stool for the shower see what she thinks too.he has hospital Friday in just worried they're going to say it's spread further.

    Thank you

  • Hi Michelle

My background. I have stage 4 advanced prostrate and was diagnosed in November last year. Its spread to hips, ribs, spine, shoulders and all long bones. Just finished my 6th chemo.PSA was 3465 when diagnosed and I'm 52.

You should have a Lions club near you. If you know what help you need .ie, whellchair, electric wheelchair, grab rails, door handles etc, they will be able to either provide or provide and usually fit it for you very quickly.

  • hi Tony, thank you for your response,I've never heard of lions club.my dad had trouble walking now he shuffles, he uses walking sticks too, he was put on morphine but made him worse so docs changed his medication for something stronger, he's having hormone treatment and radiology, plus 7 tablets during the day and 6 at night. My dad was diagnosed in December of last year but I reckon he had it in November.
  • Hi Michelle

From what I have researched it can take up to 8 years for cancer to come out of the prostrate so he could have had it longer. Morphine just made me floating all the time so I didnt carry on. Every one that is diagnosed will be put on hormone therapy straight away for life. This helped my PSA down from 3465 to235 as of my last blood test last week.

The Lions is an international organisation that works for its own comminitybut is run from america. They do fantastic work. If you have a santa on a float around your area at christmas it will be them. They provide help for local people. I would definatley google them in your area and if you know what you need just ask them they really will do everything they can.

  • Thanks Tony,

his psa keeps creeping back up again so he's been put on tablets to try and bring it down,he has it in his hips, spine shoulders, pelvis,at the moment, I have a funny feeling its spread further, he's due the Bosham again end of June(I'm not looking forward to it as well be even worse news)

  • Michelle

The only good thing about prostrate cancer is that compared to other cancers it is relatively slow growing. So if his PSA is going back up I was told by my oncologist that if it goes down slow it will come back slow.Same if it goes down fast it can come back fast. Mine is all my bones now, hips, shoulders, spine ribs, long bones etc but Im managing pain free so far but that may be down to alternative therapy like CBD and THC. I don't know what the Bosham is im afraid

  • My dad has it in his bones too, it's spread very quickly since last December, when he was diagnosed it was in his prostrate, then in march it was in his shoulder now both shoulders, both pelvisis, hips, and spine,June is his next hospital trip, he's been told he's got the aggressive form.

  • Hi michelle

Sorry to hear its spreading quickly. I think there is a lot to be said about keeping the pain away to make sure you have the best possible standard of life. It may sound counter productive but I treat my hospital appointments and chemo etc as a minor inconvenience to my day, mainly because I dont want to waste my days thinking about dying,I've got far to much to do before then. Make it about living the best you can and not about whats coming next. Easier said than done I know

  • I agree with you, my dad is 81,I just want to know how long he's got as don't like the thought of him not being here or me being at home and him dying without me their written my mum, sorry
