Sorry for the long post but urgent advice please xxxxx

Hi can anybody offer any help or advice, mum has been battling breast cancer since august 2015 she was told it was terminal after going back for the routine follow up and being told that they had also seen spots on the bones , this was definitely the biggest blow for her and all of us to deal with..

there has been spread to the bones, lung, and 4 months ago the dreaded liver.

its been a long hard battle which at many times has made us feel like the end of the road is very near , but she will suddenly surprise us and pick up and battle on again. Thank god x

however a few days after Christmas I arrived to find that my mum  (we thought had ) suffered a stroke , thank god it turns out this was Bell's palsy which I have researched and discovered can be common in people whom like her have had lots of chemo and radiotherapy.

so to the point so sorry to ramble - mums not getting up much in the last month and her appetite seems to have gone missing completely , drinking much less and is complaining of a headache for the last week (I must add she has recently had a scan that showed nothing in the head) and she feels very sick all the time

we have had a visit from the palliative care nurse who says she will be back and visit again but I am worried sick about the eating and tiredness , am I being naive to think that this is abnormal , shall I just encourage her to drink the ensure when she can ??????

I am so sorry for the long post but any advice will be so appreciated I'm very alone on this as we are a family that doesn't really talk about these things we would find it too difficult

  • Hi there ...

So sorry your going through this heartbraking time at the moment.... it's one of the hardest things we do in life ... and my heart goes out to you ...

I think it's really sad, you've been left in the dark ... there should be things put in place to help you ... if you go on Marie Currie home page.... they are there for those with terminal diagnosis and their families.... if you give them a call and find out, where you can go for the help you need ... I think once your G P or nurse can get you started so Marie Currie can give you advice and help with mum if you need it ...

Also look up local hospice near you ... they are such caring places ... where they help you too .. and that's what I'd want ... as they can give you respite or when mum needs 24/7 care ... they are worth looking into .. the help is out there, unfortunately we have to look for it .... let us know how you go .... Chrissie x

  • Thank you for your reply, I am going to contact Marie curie and hopefully get better informed and be more helpful at this horrible time xx

  • Hi Blessedbyher

I'm sorry to hear about your mum. This must be a very difficult time for you.

It sounds like the best person to get involved is her GP. He can assess to whetehr there are any other reasons that she's lost her appetite and there are options for meal replacement drinks if needed.

Other people that can come in and her with are Marie Curie nurses and District Nurses.

but I think your GP should be able to help you and then direct to you to local services and resource.

Don't forgot to look after yourself during all of this.

    Elsie

  • Thank you for your reply, the gp is useless to say the least !!!

So we have gone back to the consultant were delivered som,e pretty harsh news , we will find out tomorrow if she is eligible to carry on with treatment or it will be a case of just symptom management by the hospice nurses , I pray for good news tomorrow although I'm realistic to the facts that if there is no benefit treatment wont be given I suppose we will just wait and see x
