Using CBD oil with letrozole

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer metastases in her lungs over 2 years ago.  She has been treated with letrozole since then and the good news is her condition is staying relatively stable.  Having read lots in the press about CBD oil, she is thinking of using that too. Her consultant was very dismissive of it it so I am interested to hear if anyone else has used it at the same time as letrozole and if they think it has helped them.

  • Hello Wish

I am sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you all.

I realise that she wants to do all she can to help herself.  However, there really is not enough evidence to say that taking CBD oil will be beneficial.  There are many claims, particularly from companies that produce this, that it can cure and treat many health problems including cancer. But at the moment there has not been enough robust information from clinical trials to say that it should be used. Also, because it has not been regulated as a cancer treatment no one can say if it is safe to take alongside cancer treatments.

We have information about CBD oil and cannabis oil on our website, you can see it here

If your Mum does decide to go ahead with using CBD oil, or any kind of supplement, it's important that she let her Consultant know as there are some medications that it can have adverse effects with.

If you or your Mum would like to talk to one ofour team of nurses about things then you can call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    I hope this helps.
    Best wishes,

  • Hi wish, I've been using cbd oil but only as a pain killer nothing else and I've heard of others using it same nothing else companies who produce it brag to get sales up nothing else, as I said it works as a pain killer it some cases but not all. Best wishes....

  • Thank you Billy.  Thankfully she isn't in pain, so she would be using it in the hope that it would help her feel less anxious about things and, who knows, maybe it might even hit some of the cancer cells.  She has lived beyond the time she was originally given which are so grateful for and we want to maximise her quality of life.  We would really like her consultant to give his view at this point whether, on balance considering where she is in her 'cancer journey',  it is worth a shot at CBD.  Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be the most sympathetic or diplomatic of Drs - which is very sad considering the role he is working in.

  • Hi trouble is cbd isn't recognised as a med because no proper study it could do harm instead of good it could react with other treatments, please be careful. Best wishes......... Billy

  • Hi wish, I just wanted to pop on to say i think you may be confusing CBD oil with Cannabis oil. CBD Oil is a food supplement widely available in health food shops etc and as the others have said is often used by people who feel that it helps with pain relief.  CBD oil is not a medicine and will not treat your mum's cancer. On the other hand Cannabis Oil has been approved for use as a medicine for certain conditions where there is a possibility that it can work in that way. At present it is NOT licensed as a treatment for cancer.
Other than where it is licensed for use, Cannabis is classified as a class B drug and it is therefore illegal to  have it or sell it. You can read more about medical cannabis on the NHS website.. As Moderator Jenn has said, there may be side effects so if you do go ahead and purchase CBD oil you should make sure the doctor is aware.
