Mum diagnosed with stage 4

Following an invite for a lung screening at our docs my mum was told she may have lung cancer so all the tests were done and the end result was lung cancer which has spread to her pelvis so this is stage 4.

The good news is she's unbelievably fit and healthy. She took the screening invite just as a precaution and the doc/nurses have all said she is well enough to explore a few treatments and had she not taken the screening invite then 6/12 mth time it could be a different story.

I'm really struggling looking at this healthy woman and letting the fact she has stage 4 cancer sink in.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has been through something similar.

Thank you x

  • Hello Roseg84 and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has been given this diagnosis. I'm sure that it's come as a great shock to you all especially as you say she has been so fit and well. However, it sounds positive that the Consultant has said she has treatment options available to her. Hopefully the next appointment she has will give you some answers and reassurance about things.
We do have some information on our website about lung cancer which may be of interest. You're welcome to call and speak to our team of nurses as well. They are typically available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040. The office is closed now but reopens Friday morning and will be closed on New Years Day as well.

Keep in touch Rose and let us know how your Mum gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello

I'm so sorry to hear about your mum, its so difficult to deal with isnt it. Especially as you put it 'the game face', been doing this for weeks now while waiting for results and its absolutely exhausting!!

If you need a rant or vent anytime I dont mind as we're both facing the same thing at the min xx

  • Thank you lovely same goes to you.. Its just really really hard and I don't think it matters how old you are it literally breaks your heart seeing them ill.... Sorry to hear about your mum xxxxx

  • Hello both of you, just to say I did have the same diagnosis for my Mum - what we thought was a persistent cold was stage 4 lung cancer. All I would say is that the palliative care made a most enormous difference to her and to the family...but it was a short period only for us from diagnosis to death. We managed to make some great memories in that time though, and she was able (and well enough) to say goodbye to friends and family....Don't just keep game face on though, its exhausting and as the family you are in the middle of it, you may find friends can support without having to be in the middle....in any case thinking of you both now.

  • Hi!

Sorry I've only just seen your response and I am so sorry to hear about your mum but its lovely you made some memories (those will never fade!).

My mum starts immunotherapy on Monday, she's scared but staying positive. Its true what you said about friends though, I've realised I have the most amazing support from the most unlikely people especially in work.

Hope you're ok and thank you for the response xx
