Managing symptoms: endometrial cancer

My mum was diagnosed with endometrial cancer a few weeks ago. It’s suggested it may be present in the cervix too. The consultant is positive about the prognosis - recommending a hysterectomy and possible radiotherapy. I believe this is good news - but mum is convinced they have got it wrong!

She is not managing the symptoms well (significant PV bleeding) and was reassured by her GP that this is to be expected. The practice nurse took bloods yesterday and the FBC was normal but there is a slightly low potassium level.

Mum has not been out since the diagnosis and personal care has declined - spending most of the time laying down or in bed. This evening she said her legs had lost power - and dad and I had great trouble getting her to the bathroom. The out of hours doctor had booked a visit with the first responder - but is as baffled as the rest of us as to what the problem is.

She’s only 69 years old - but is like an old lady in a nursing home! It’s like she’s given up before we even start treatment. I’m worried dad will struggle now that she’s unable to move.

  • Hi kaf1sh,

I'm very sorry to read about your mum and how she's getting on at the moment. Although I'm glad to hear the consultant is positive about it.

Of course I'm unsure as to the reason for your mum's lack of mobility, but everyone reacts to these situations and it may be that this is her way of doing so. Hopefully this situation improves soon for your mum and in particular once treatment progresses.

Make sure you (and your dad) get the advice and support you need from the doctors. Do also reach out to an organisation like Macmillan for further support if you feel you need it.

Like I say, I hope things improve soon for your mum and that things become more manageable for your dad too.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Many thanks. Unfortunately the time of year has complicated everything. No one seems to be available across the various services. I've managed to get a loan of a walking frame which is at least getting her to the bathroom. Beyond that she refuses to get up! Our next milestone is getting her to the hospital on 2nd Jan!
