What now? Immunotherapy stopped due to high liver count.

My brother has Stage 4 Nodular Melanoma with spreads to his adrenal gland , liver and pancreas along with multiple skin deposits. After 4 combined and six single courses of immunotherapy which shrunk all the tumours very well  , he has been taken off his treatment due to the last two courses giving him a very high liver count.. The Doctor was very vague about what happens next in terms of will the Cancer start growing again.Mibbe it will , mibbe it won't etc etc My brother went downhill rapidly after intial diagnosis before the immunotherapy kicked in . Worried now that the doctor was trying to soften the blow but instead of making the best of now i'll get caught out by him getting ill one dayand it'll be too late to do stuff.. Anyone been taken off treatment and stayed well ? Hearing that would be great!

  • I'm sorry that your brother's immunotherapy had to be stopped and can understand your concern about what happens next.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find anyone with the same diagnosis who is in a similar situation at the present time but I did see that a member called [@Ruthn123]‍ revealed last year they were having immunotherapy for stage 4 melanoma. I'm not sure if they're still having it or if their treatment has stopped but either way, lets cross our fingers that they pick up on this post and pop back to share their experience with you.

Our cancer nurses are just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040 if you'd like to talk things through with them as well.

Wishing you and your brother all the very best,

  • Hi AndyM,

I'm a Stage 3 melanoma patient so I don't have personal experience of this situation but I do know of some patients who have stopped immunotherapy because of toxic side effects. In many cases these patients are still showing a good response a long time after their last treatment so it's believed that the response from immunotherapy keeps working. Because this treatment is still only a few years old they only have 4 years worth of data to show how long patients are responding to the treatment after they stop mid cycle but it's still encouraging. Sometimes patients also restart treatment if their side effects resolve themselves but his consultant won't want to raise his hopes until they see if his liver count starts to recede. I'm afraid it's a waiting game to see how things go which I know is difficult but hopefully your brother will continue to be a responder.

  • Thanks very much for the replies. .As you say there is very little info available to doctors because of the time factors involved. So i was hoping for some replies with positive experiences of a similiar situation . On all the hospital visits i have never came across anyone with  my brothers diagnosis and there is nothing online about his current prognosis. . Mibbe need to accept there are no answers at this time. and learn to live with the uncertaintity , as hard as it is.

  • Hi I've just come across this. I was searching online for answers for my mum. She has stage 4 melanoma, I'm not sure of specific details. She is such a private person and burries her head in the sand at every opportunity so getting details is hard. But she called today quite upset as her treatment of immunotherapy has been stopped due to blood tests showing her liver is reacting badly.
I can't seem to find any info online. Wondering what this could mean for her.

I hope your brother is ok and doing well x

  • Hi LottieT and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I noticed you were trying to connect with AndyM but as there's been no activity on this discussion since 2019, there is a chance you may not hear back from him.

I hope you are able to find more recent discussions about this subject when using our 'search forum' option in the purple bar at the top of the page but as you've been finding it difficult to find information online it may be worth getting in touch with one of our cancer nurses to find out more. If you'd like to have a chat with them about your mum's situation, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
