Chemo

My partner has grade 4 glioma multiforme . This is the 3rd cycle of chemo and there has been a shrinkage of the tumour . This is good news as the first round of temolozide did not work. When asked if the life expectancy which is  12-18 months would be prolonged due to the shrinkage . We were informed that the expectancy is still statistically the same . Can anyone help as I’m confused as to if the chemo working why the outcome remains the same .

  • Hi,

So sorry to read about your situation. I'm not surprised you're confused - someone needs to work on their communication skills before they talk to patients or their loved ones again.

If this were strictly true, there would be no point in anyone having the treatment.

What they should have said was that statistics cannot and should not be applied to individual patients as these sort of statistics always quote averages and none of us are average.

When I started chemo, I was told that I probably had between 2 and 12 months without chemo and up to 18 months maybe 2 years if it worked. That came with a qualification that these were only averages which could be wildly wrong in an individual case. I have a different type of cancer and was on different chemo but the principals are the same. The best they can do is make an educated guess.

The fact that there has been measurable shrinkage is a hopeful and a positive sign.

    Best wishes

    Dave
