Prostate - timescales

My father aged 81 was running marathons Sept 17, diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer (PC) in Nov 17 despite showing no open symptoms. PC was picked up in a routine blood test.

He now struggles to walk 100 metres, lives on his own as my mother passed away earlier in year, and myself and brother work away.

Last week he had a bone scan and 60% of upper body was black with cancer.

The specialist is considering isolated radiotherapy to the most painful areas.

What has worried us is that the specialist has taken father off chemotherapy drugs as they were not working with PSA increasing and has just prescribed morphine for pain relief.

His pain is becoming unbearable despite morphine and 5 days after initial prescribed morphine medication we are going back to GP for more and to request stronger morphine

As morphine is now only medication/ pain relief are we looking at days/ weeks/ months or hopefully years survival?

Also should we be giving consideration to getting help considering he lives on own even though he would hate this?

I appreciate everyone is different but what are peoples experiences once chemotherapy withdrawn

Thanks for any responses

  • Hi Stephen.

I'm sorry that you have to join us at what should be a happy time of the year.  I can't begin to imagine what you're going through right now.

There's no easy way to say any of this: I think you need to discuss with your father's doctor whether he now needs hospice care, and if not, whether he can be referred to a pain specialist.

I think you need to face the possibility that this may be his final Christmas.
