My Brother's Leukemia

My younger brother had a couple of polyps removed during a sigmoidoscopy about 4 weeks ago. He saw his GP last week (Wednesday) who told him the results show he has Leukemia, which was a bolt out the blue. He was told to get a blood test in our local Boots Chemist by the weekend to find out if its treatable?.  Boots was fully booked so he attended a walk-in clinic at the hospital.  Nothing was heard so I phoned his GP surgery this week who said yes, they did have his results and if my brother phoned them he would be given the results.  My brother did speak to them and was told the results were abnormal (?) but the local onocology dpt were aware and he would be 'fast tracked'.  'Fast tracked' can mean different time periods to different people so when nothing was heard by today I phoned the hospital who confirmed he is on their system, the consultant had seen his records and an appointment will be made for him to be seen in the next 6 to 8 weeks. Its just over a week since my brother got told about his Leukemia and as most people know, knowing nothing makes it feels a lot longer than that.  I know I am so 'up in the air' at the moment but I wanted to know if this itime period is normal and correct.  As a family we are usually so quiet and accepting of situations and rarely speak up to object, in fact you will find us at the back of every queue going, but I love my brother and will do anything and everything to support him.

  • Hi there ...

So sorry you've been left in the dark .. think I'd be fuming to be given that news and no plan of action / treatment .. that does seem like a really long wait ... I'd give McMillan a call, they have free phone Mon to Fri..  or our nurses on here have a free phone too ..

Write down any questions you have, coz it's easy to forget ... and a pen and paper so you can write down any information they give you .. good luck, and don't give up, it's only nateral to want more care and info .. let us know how you get on ...  Chrissie x

  • Hi Chrissie, thank you for getting back to me.  My brother recieved the hospital letter saying he would see the consultant mid January.  He phoned them as he thought this seemed a long wait and the Consultant phoned him back.  He was told he had Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia which is a slow process and there is no real need to see him earlier but if treatment is indicated it will be looked at iin January. Now my brother knows  he has CLL and his appointment is not so urgent he feels much calmer (though I'm silently struggling with 'not so urgent')  I'm sorry I ranted on a bit in my last post, we were all really shocked last week and hearing nothing made it worse but thank you very much for your help and advice and now we are registered to your site we will keep in touch.  Thank you

  • Hi there ...

Hopefully it's made a clearer picture of it for you ... I think those words ... cancer / leukaemia  etc are what we always dread hearing ... but take down McMillan number, so if anything is unclear, they can explain things ...  but wer always here if you need to vent ... or just chat about it ...

  • Hi

Just wanted to chip in here about leukemia. The doctor's take of not so urgent seems fair so far. Some of the other type of leukemias are very aggressive and usually oncologists try to start treatment immediately. My husband went from diagnosis to treatment start within one week. I would say that overall it's good to stay on your toes so you are not ignored but for now it might make sense to stay calm and wait it out. Wishing strength to you in this difficult time.
