Living longer than expected

Hello,

A freind of mine is in an odd situation: he has/is out-living his Dr's estimated time left... Great, right?

It would be, but the hospice and Macmillan are withdrawing care from him soon. He has only been recieving end of life care (no treatment like chemo or radiology) for a few months now. Because he's still alive, he's been removed for carer lists for the local NHS services, and Macmillan.

This is obvioulsy very stressful for his family and friends, as well as him. We don't know what to do. Can end of life care be withdrawn, just becasue that "end of life" is lasting longer than predicted? The NHS's own website states that the care might be needed for "years", and he's only had it for a few months.

If anyone has been in, or is in a similar situation, please help. Everyone deserves dignity at the end.

  • hello,

my dads been on end of life care since in my step mum passed away on his birthday on the 17th Oct, however i was worried this would be taken away but sue ryder and my dads Doctor said they do assess the cases every 6 weeks or so but in most cases they are always carried on, so maybe this is why they are reviewing it but im sure they wont take the care away ... they cant really no one can predict when someone will pass and if hes young and strong he will fight longer to be here ( my personal view anyways)

  • Hi I wonder if when they say they are removing end of life care, they have not explained what they will be replacing it with.  My husband receives Palliative care which means he cannot be cured, he is not getting any treatment.. but has not reach the end of life stage of his journey.  If this is has not been mentioned ask for Palliative Care.  I would have thought this is something everyone in his position should automatically be given.

I hope he gets the assistance he deserves at this time in his life
