My dad - Dehydration and bowel obstruction

My dad was diagnosed with late stage 3 mesothelioma (asbestoses) about 10 weeks ago. We are struggling to get him to drink enough fluids to keep him hydrated, he doesn't want to drink water and we tried some sugar free concentrated drinks with water but his tastebuds changes almost daily... the dehydration causes him to be very confused and disorientated and causes problems with his stomach...

How can we keep him hydrated when he doesn't want to drink or eat anything? He doesn't like icechips says it's too cold for his throat, other drinks are too sweet...

Desperate for some advice please

  • Hi they usualy give intravenus fluids in hospital have you asked your nurse or dr to do it for you if your at home also its the minerals lost i often mention dehydration as i had it with my partner if i didnt go on at her all the time she wouldnt drink enough and it realy makes you feel awful  felt like a bully at times but she knew i was doing it for her.best wishs .paul

  • Thank you for the reply Paul. Sorry to hear you had to go through this horrible experience as well.

My dad goes to hospital to get intravenous vitamins and fluids once a week, it's at home that is the struggle. You're right you do feel like a bully even though trying to help and make them feel better whilst yourself feeling so helpless. We stay on a farm far away from town which doesn't make things easier either. Hospital is more than 2 hours away

  • Hi sounds like you live way out yes its difficult to know what to do so all you can do is your best and sounds like thats exactly what your doing i know you can get the fortisp shakes to give nourishment but you can get fortijuise which is thinner and a lot more easy to drink and gives fluid pity they cant train us to do it only other thing is to tell him hes hurting you not drinking sorry cant suggest anything more as you are already doing all you can do .best wishs paul
