Help for my daughter

I am asking for help for my daughter whose boyfriend of 6 years has a sarcoma. He has had some surgeries and he is now in the USA where he has been having radiotherapy and proton therapy. She has been to visit him for a couple of weeks and is going again next week. She has said that she can't cope and doesn't think she can carry on. I think she needs counselling but there doesn't seem to be any help for her as she is not married . Help.

  • Hi ClaireS. Welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's plight. I'm assuming she's looking for counselling in the UK and she's a UK resident.

I'm sorry but you don't give us much to go on. I really think you need to provide a lot more detail, including what steps have already been taken, otherwise we'll just end up telling you what you've already tried.

  • Hello ClaireS. I don't know whether you have already looked at MacMillan Cancer Support; in case you haven't I am attaching a screen headed "In Your Area" from the MacMillan website.  You may have to create an account to use it (doesn't cost anything, it is a charity) and then you can type in your postcode and find support services in the the area where  you live which may be of help to your daughter.  Best wishes. Annie

  • Hello Claire,

I am sorry to hear about your daughter's boyfriend and how the sarcoma diagnosis has been affecting him and her. It must be extremely hard for her especially as they live far away from each other. I am surprised that she hasn't been offered any help because she is not married.

I thought I would point you in the direction of a few links from our website about counselling. Although these were more intended for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, you will find that the information is still relevant to anyone like your daughter who has been affected by the cancer of a loved one. You can read more here about counselling in general and how it might work. We also have a very useful guide here on how to find the right counsellor for you. Your daughter's GP will be your first port of call as they will be able to point you in the right direction. We also have a list of counselling organizations here including some which specialize in relationship issues as for example:

    Relate

Relate provide relationship counselling to couples and individuals throughout the UK. There is often a waiting list. Clients are asked to contribute towards the cost of their counselling sessions according to their income. They also provide counselling services by telephone or email.  You can ring them to find out about Relate's services and your nearest Relate Centre or Relate counsellor.

    Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships

The Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships provides relationship counselling and therapy to couples and individuals at their 2 centres in London. There is often a waiting list. Clients are asked to contribute towards the cost of their counselling sessions according to their income.

I hope this helps a little! I hope your daughter seeks the help that she needs during this difficult time. I am sure that your support means a lot to her at the moment.
