Mum living in England and I'm in australia

hi my mum has been diagnosed with pancreatic one week ago. She lives on her own and is 85 years. I am in the throws of getting my Aussie passport renewed which will take another 2 to 3 weeks till it arrives and I can only stay for 3 months. It is worrying me greatly that I will have to leave her after three months but she wants me to be there now. I do not know how long she has. If I ring her doctor they will probably not give me any information due to privacy laws. What do you think I should do

  • Hi Kaysie.

I see you've already received a few replies to your other posting, but no one addressed one issue that you raised here: how long you can stay in the UK.

I'm no expert, but I just checked on the UK Visa web site

I selected Australia and then "Join partner or family for a long stay".

The web site says "You don’t need a visa if you’re visiting family or a partner for 6 months or less."

From this, I think you can stay for up to 6 months, not the 3 months you said in your posting. After this time you can apply for a visa to stay longer, but it is eye-wateringly expensive.

I must emphasise that I am no expert. I merely checked on the web site. I advise you to get professional guidance to confirm this information.

  • Thanks for your reply I will check out when I get over there

    Hi Kaysie,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. This must be very worrying for you when you live so far away.

Your doctor cannot tell you anything about her health without having your mum's permission, as this would be in breach of the data protection act. Perhaps if you asked her to intimate to her doctor that she is willing for him to tell you about her condition this would be ok?

I do hope that you can get longer than 3 months if you need it.

Please keep in touch and let us know how things go. We are always here for you whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
