  • Hi

Its good how you've seen all what goes on and every one is very friendly.

Yes the reason I believe is because they fear the higher dose might be to much for your FIL its still a high dose, on my third of six sessions I caigyt neutrippenna low red blood cells which made me very easy to catch life threatening illness. Hospitalised for a few days I had plenty of Meds and blood taken.

My next appoint for chemo they dropped the dose because of this so its not unusual.

There are other Meds that go with the chemo they will tell you Friday, one thing I tell everyone is keep an eye on his Tempreture it's easy to catch something as I did. His red cells will be low so if either of you have a cold or flu steer clear of your father in law while he has chemotherapy.

Good luck to him Friday sure it will all go well.

  • Hello Lisa

How are things going, the first time is the worst, hope he is able to cope.

  • Hello Joe, sorry I've been abit slow in getting back to you. So Friday went fine, he actually seemed in better form after having the chemo than he was all week before he'd had it. Then on Friday night it started, he was in awful pain, he described it like a tooth ache pain only in his legs right to his knees. He was on a stick Saturday, come Saturday evenin he needed two sticks so we got him crutches. I rang the hospital they asked for him to come in, he said he wouldn't be able. Then I rang the doctor on call who prescribed him stronger co codomal they seemed to think it sounded like nerve pain. So this morning I called over and he said the pain isn't just as bad today, and he slept well, he didn't get any sleep on Friday night at all. And his cheeks were bright red yesterday but his temper was fine it was 36.5. I said well take each day at a time. I'm keeping a diary of everything Joe. Hope you're keeping well yourself. When did your treatment finish Joe?

  • Hello Lisa

First chemo affects everyone differently, I was never sick, the leg thing watch for any swelling as this could be something else,  he will suffer fatigue and it will sap his strength, not everything happens straight away, I hope they mentioned his blood count will be lower so infection is easy to come by.

Its good your keeping a diary I did, any medication given by the doctor or hospital keep track of as when you go next time you need to tell the urologist.

hope he keeps fighting a little excersise helps but first week is to take it easy.

    take care

    Joe

  • Hello lisa

its been over a week how's your other half coping with the side effects.

    jor

  • Hello Joe, my FIL has been doing good in my opinion, he hasn't had any sickness yet, he had a pain in his back at the weekend and was taking co codomal to ease it, still has the nerve pains in his legs. He hasn't left the house much which is very not like him he's always out in the shed or garden. I think now that he's out of the 7-10days of high risk infection he should try and get out and get some light exercise. He does look quite drained mind you. How did you find the second session of chemo compared with the first Joe, were there stronger side effects the more you have?

  • Hi Lisa

The first session is very taxing, especially for active people, as it drains your very fibre of the body not used to all the different reactions, excersise is very good as it keeps the muscles from seizing up, there will be what they call chemo brain, it's like you forget things or cannot remember little things, this is not unusual it wears off I had it worried my wife but I am ok now.

The second session is much like the first, it's hard to get used to its not until the forth that the body gets used to all this poison flowing through it, just keep a watchful eye on his Tempreture as its getting colder and easy to catch a bug.

I know it's hard for him at the moment, wish I could say it gets easier, just keep an eye on him as if he uses crutches moving around doing basic things will not be easy and can prove depressing and he needs to keep positive through the early sessions.

  • I would say his mood is low at the moment, because he never wanted to accept that he was sick but now that the energy is drained out of him, he's left to sit with a lot of time of his hands. We all had the cold last week so me & the kids stayed away until today we're keeping a good eye on him as you say infection is easy picked up.

  • Hello Lisa

His low key is very understandable, no likes the thought of being ill, especially having this dreaded desease, in my case it's like the sword of damacles hanging over me, but while I have a breath I ll fight it every step of the way.

I was like your FIL very active then this, I found doing hobbies even sitting down, eg model kits it can take weeks doing them, I was good with clay so I started making models of my daughters, crosswords and quizzes, now I ve gone on to ( very slowly I might add ) repairing watches, I am not good but internet helps.

Anything he used to enjoy just with mimimal effort all helps.

He will enjoy a visit as long as he knows the reason you were away.

wish him good health and stay in there.
