Dad's recent diagnosis

So my Dad has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 Oral Cancer (T4a n2b m0),

In the space of 4 weeks (Week 1 was MRI/CT Scan) he has gone from being able to speak and eat properly to now not being able to talk or swallow. Everything is progressing really fast and whilst we are all trying to stay strong it is overwhelming seeing how much pain he is in.

He will be having surgery, radiotheraphy and chemo in due course, but people we have spoken to are suggesting a whole range of alternative therapies to help in the lead up to treatment including; Ketone diets, alkaline diets, cannabis oil, bioresonance therapy, massage therapy etc.

Has anyone else been in this situation, what did you do and how do you cope?

  • Hi SChau, I'm really sorry to read the news of your dad. I to am going through a similar ordeal with my pops, 5 weeks diagnosed with stage 4 metastatised pancreatic carcinoma. Unfortunately I cannot help in terms of preparing for chemo treatment, my dad's still waiting to hear if they will give him the option of chemo but it's not looking promising. Massage therapy seems a good option, gets the blood flowing, adds necessary oils to skin to prevent it from drying and he will feel more relaxed and comfortable. Many people cope in different ways when cancer hits a close family member. My ways of dealing with it is to talk to my partner about how I am feeling, I try to not bottle it up because I only become frustrated. I have just begun to splurge all my thoughts and feelings into a journal, and I am beginning a scrap book memoir to fill full of memories spent with my dad and family. My sister copes by spending time alone and thinking by herself whereas my mum's current way of coping is to cry when it is just me and her & remains strong and stable in the presence of my dad. You will find your own way of coping, there is no right or wrong way of dealing with it. I wish you and your family all the very best x
