Oesophageal cancer

Hi my mam was dignosed in September with oesophageal cancer has had 5 weeks of chemotions and radiotherapy which has shrank the tumor which is great and this Wednesday she is having surgery to remove her whole oesophagus and bring her stomach up to her neck due to the tumor being so high up.

I am absolutely terrified I'm only child and mam has no family.

Anyone gone thro this

Thank you inadvance

  • Hi,

There are quite a few of us on here coping with Oesophageal Cancer as the patient or as family. I don't have experience of the procedure you mention, as my own case is inoperable, but it sounds hopeful and I'm pretty sure someone will be able to give you some positive feedback.

    Good luck and best wishes!

    Dave

  • Hi.

I went through the operation in April 2016 called an Oesophogectomy. I had a brilliant surgeon who undertook the operation and my tumour was nearer to the stomach but involved taking half of my oesophagus out and stretching the stomach to connect to the oesophagus. It is a major procedure and I spent 8 days in hospital, can be up to two weeks.

The operation was successful and I am recovering well, however in my case via some affected lymph nodes my cancer spread to my liver, so am currently on chemo and Herceptin route at moment. I hope your mother will be ok and I am sure everything will be, and the staff at the specialist units that do these operations are fantastic so do not worry too much.

    All of the very best.

    Simon.

  • Thank you x my mam is so positive and focused and yes all the staff and sugeon seem really nice. They say because it's so high the stomach will be brought up to her neck and all lymph nodes taking out.

So pleased you had a successful operation and wish you lots of luck

    Thank you
