Hi my husband was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer at the base of the tongue in April 2014 .30 radiotherapy treatments later we were told the tumour had 'melted away' by the consultant. We went for check-Ups every 6-8 weeks -yes he's doing ok.But I knew he had a swelling on left side of his neck-' don't worry it's lymphadema caused by radiotherapy' they said ( I knew it was more than that!)Anyway fast forward to May 2016 -this swelling started to 'break out' so back to A&E -where he had two biopsies which confirmed a tumour. He now has a tumour ( inside and outside his neck)growing by the day! Anyway the outcome was he had to go to The Christie (Manchester) -second time for treatment. We decided to go on the clinical trials and he had 5 sessions of the latest treatment-auto immunotherapy.Unfortunately they have decided to take him off the trials as-I can't say that there is no improvement -but he now has tumours in both lungs ( not smoked for 43 years!)some of them have shrunk by millimetres some have grown by millimetres. They are concerned about his neck as there are many blood vessels where it is-so they have decided to put him on chemo .We are very concerned about this naturally.I know this is 'treatable not curable'My husband is a very young 74 always took pride in his appearance, very attractive and was a terrible flirt with the ladies!(only joking!)He has lost 5 1/2 stones in weight. It breaks my heart to see him suffering-I can't believe we are going through this -but you just carry on -our lives have changed for ever. We loved holidays and going out for meals but now Ihave to liquidise all his food-he has 4 fortisips a day -he can't taste anything. Its a nightmare-we have a great family and fabulous friends.Sorry to go on but it's good to share with others. Thanks for reading this post xxxx
