Syringe Driver ... does it change the person?

Hello all,

My Dad has terminal cancer (both lungs, oesophogus and bones) and the hospice have said it is time for a syringe driver in order to help him with the pain.  He is only awakew about an hour each day and in that hour he is vommitting and uncomfortable ... so i hope it helps.  SOmethign the nusrse said scared me though.  She said with a lot of people, once they go on a syringe driver they often become even more sleepy and non communicative ... so i am scared that iw on't be able tot alk to him again.  What are other people's experiences of syringe drivers?  He will be having morpheine and anti sickness through the driver.

Many thanks

Jeffinee

  • Hi Jeffinee,

I'm sure the nurse wouldn't have realised her words would cause you so much worry.

There's no reason why the syringe driver should cause such a change. It is just a way of ensuring your Dad gets the right medication without having to have umpteen injections every day.

My Mum was on a syringe driver during her final days and it really helped ease her pain and anxiety. We had a chat just a few minutes before she died, she was sleepy and drowsy but not in the pain she had suffered between injections before the driver was available. Morphine and other opiates do make people drowsy, but it is better than suffering in pain and it is the drugs not the means they are delivered by that cause drowsiness.

    I hope this helps

    Dave

  • Hello Jeffinne, Sadly I lost my mom of non-hodgkins lymphoma (blood cancer) a few months back but she was on a Syringe Driver to help with the pain. She was on morphine and it did help early on with the pain, and she was more communicative, but the more they increased the dosage the more sleepy she got and in the end was constantly asleep. This was my experience, yours of course maybe totally different. I wish nothing but peace for you and your dad.
  • So sorry to hear about your Dad Jeffinee, the syringe driver should make him feel more comfortable.

My wife was in the same situation and before the driver her medication was sort of peaks and troughs, in severe pain then medicated and very sleepy.

When she had the syringe pump fitted, she was much more relaxed and comfortable, but agree she was a bit more sleepy.

I think that because she was comfortable, that was such a releif for her and I felt more comfortable too as she was not in pain.

I wish you the best of luck.
