Dad has had a prostectomy

I'm trying to understand where Dad is up to in regard to his cancer. Three weeks ago Dad had his prostate removed via robotic surgery, he had to go back the first week because he was bleeding from his penis not in the urine. We tried not to worry too much as we were told this can happen sometimes. Despite the obvious pain from surgery Dad has been so brave. I know he is mortified that he cannot control his bladder, he's a proud man. Though he doesn't talk about it, we understand and respect his space to come to terms with this. We were told that dad would be returning to hospital for post op checkup on the 2nd August. The hospital called today and his oncologist wants to see my dad on Monday. It looks like the cancer has spread from his prostate it was aggressive. Dad hasn't had any form of treatment before his surgery. Does that mean it can still be treated and cured hopefully . I don't understand all the different terms used what they mean. Thank you xxx
  • Hello Kate91167,

I am sorry to hear that your dad's cancer is aggressive. I hope you find out more soon about what treatment options he is going to have.

It can be difficult to understand the different medical terms used. If you have any question, don't hesitate to give our nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040. You can talk to them Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will hear from others here who have had treatment for prostate cancer and they may be able to answer any questions you may have.

Best wishes to you and your dad,

  • Thank you Lucie for your kind reply.

i have decided that as I have driven myself insane and probably my poor hubby by diagnosing my lovely dad in my head since the phone call on Friday from his oncologist. That no news is great news ! My mum will be with dad tomorrow for the appointment at 6.30pm pain in the proverbial that it's the end of the day for my dad..nothing worse than waiting ..but we will deal with it

haha listen to me with my brave sensible head on.  Only problem is I'm never  sure which head I will wake up with x. Love to everyone xx

  • We'll be thinking of you tomorrow for your dad's appointment. Do let us know how it goes.

    Keeping everything crossed for you,

    Lucie

  • Hello Kate,

My Dad has advanced prostrate cancer so its possible they have found that it has spread to his bones as has happened with my father. Dad is 88 and has alays been fit but this has been very bad for him. Two of his 3 brothers died of it so it was always going to be a probability he would die of it, hes getting testosterone treatment so we will see how it goes. Im a Survivor myself of 21 years and Dad was there for me

  • Hi thank you for your reply, I'm sorry to hear that your dad is poorly too.  My dad is only 69. He's pulled through multiple strokes and heart attacks.  Not that you would ever know to see him, this is so different. I feel so useless, apart from loving him, and Making him laugh about what my youngest son has been up too...he's a real character ... and grandads best friend  I can't fix this.

Trust me to be wide awake now....when it's time to get my lovely boys up..I'll  be flat out..,,thank god for alarm clocks

    have a happy Monday

    Kate xx

  • You might not fix it but you can help and thats important

  • Dear Smokie

we have been given the most fantastic news, my dad was called in early to tell him that the surgery has worked and he is cancer free.  He has a nasty infection which they are treating with a broad spectrum antibiotic  which is making him feel very poorly and is painful.  The hospital have told my dad that they are expecting to see him looking and feeling a lot better when they see him again in four weeks.  He is incontinent (bladder) at the moment and that isn't likely to change just yet, but we will take it as it comes. I have my dad that's all that matters.  I feel very guilty but very relieved.. I wish everyone could have this kind of news.  I am so pleased to read you too are a survivor of this dreadful disease, my kindest wishes to you and thoughts for your lovely dad

  • This is good new. I was in this position in December 2010 when I had a robotic radical prostatectomy. My PSA dropped to 've had an RP, the important symbol on a PSA test is the "<" (less than), and not the actual number itself. The 't too much leakage). For some time I carried spare undies and pads with me but never needed them. Eight months after my op I was confident enough to catch a train and go on a day trip around London without using any pads at all. I've had 2-3 minor leakages in the years since, and nothing for the last couple of years. I continue with the pelvic floor exercises still. Unfortunately, I couldn't have full nerve sparing so I can't get strong erections - I'm still trying with various alternatives and I haven't given up hope. However, sex can still continue even without erections, you just have to be a little more imaginative.
