I'm only 17 and I'm going to lose someone so important

My gran is 70, they found a tumor in her throat which we have now discovered is cancerous and the cancer in her esophagus has spread to her liver and her lungs. She had ovarian cancer 17 years ago but beat it. How long can I expect to have her for? Anyone please help, any estimates help me

  • Hello x my mum as lung cancer stage 4 aggressive she has had four sessions of chemo which is working got final one tomorrow the cancer has shrunk right down.

Did they say which type of cancer small cell or large?

    Is it treatable or operable?

  • I'm so sorry to hear that! For my gran its terminal, they're going to remove the tumour but she may not even have chemo, it's up to her whether or not she will have chemo because it will not save her life it may only give her some more time. I just want to know how long I have because I know it won't be too long that I have with her because it's spread from her esophagus to her lungs and her liver (two vital organs) Thanks X

  • Caitlin, I am so sorry to hear your news, nan's are so important, aren't they!

I would just say don't concentrate on how long - everyone is different and doctors rarely give you a time limit.  Just concentrate on enjoying being with your nan and make some lovely memories with her.  I have terminal cancer and my 7 grandchildren bring me the greatest joy.  I am sure your nan feels this about you, Caitlin.  Feel free to come and talk to us anytime. x

  • Hi Caitlin

I'd agree with what the others have said about concentrating on the time you have but if you want numbers you can find them here:

    beta-about-cancer.cancerresearchuk.org/.../

I won't post the numbers directly because not everybody wants to know and they don't want to stumble upon it in a post like this. Also bear in mind that your gran may not want to know this information so don't go blurting it out! OK?

It sounds as if you want the section headed advanced oesophagal cancer

There is a lot of variation in how long people survive with terminal cancer so the way these things are generally expressed is by saying what percentage of people survive for x years after diagnosis.

Spend the time wisely and be there for her
