Feeling my Dad has Advanced cancer.

My Dad has an ulcer under his tongue so after 2weeks his GP sent him to see a consultant at hospital within a week & told us it was not an ulcer but cancer & that my Dad has had it a long time not just 2 weeks & it was under his teeth & in his jaw as well, he said it was big (over 3cm I think)  he is waiting for a biopsy, cat scan & he already had a full blood test on the day,my Dad didn't ere all of it.Consultant said it would take 4 weeks & if I had any questions  but I couldn't think at the time. My Dad was 76 on the 14.04.15  & his appointment was the same day.He in as lost weight because he's not eating as he's in a lot of pain plus having difficulty chewing & some times he is finding it hard to talk, he is now on stronger painkillers & morphine as well, he has toothache & ear ache as well as not having any energy in him as that's not him. I know there will be no treatment for him as not in good health plus they would of got him tested by now. I am only just holding it together as I'm with him every day so it's going to be so hard when we find out it is & knowing I will lose him one day, just don't know how to cope with it.

  • Hi Mower, so sorry this has happened to your dad.

You can contact the macmillan nurse assigned to your dad to ask questions. She may not have the answers immediately but will find out what she can, and may also help with other things you are in need of.

I think your dad and you and your family can get counciling to help you during this difficult time if you ask too. Sometimes we need to lean on others a bit when times are hard.

Thinking of you and your dad and wishing him well

  • Thank you for your reply its so hard seeing him in pain & thinking how long I have with him, but got a load of questions to ask his consultant when we get an appointment but don't know when that will be as he has cat scan today & not heard any think about him going for his biopsy yet, it's just a waiting game & it feel like they are taking forever.

  • Hi Mower,

I know the wait seems sooo long for appointments and tests When you want to rush in and sort it all out. If you are worried that you haven't heard about an appointment you can always ring and check that they have it in hand.

    Sending hugs for you both

  • Hi mower

Just caught up with your thread as have been away for a few days.  The waiting period for appointments can be very frustrating but if you and  your Dad have concerns before an appointment comes through (especially as regards his eating/pain relief) do contact his GP.  When my husband was in between appointments we were advised by his hospital team to contact his GP and then they could arrange support services to call where necessary. It worked well for us and hope can for you too. I found the whole journey a real rollercoaster of emotions and this forum helped enormously when the need to offload or discuss things.

The site also has a free telephone line to the nurses if you are in the UK (from landlines and some mobile networks (telephone number on this page) if you would like to talk things through on a more personal level. All the very best.Jules54

  • Hi Jules54

Got a call saying he will have his biopsy on wednesday at 12 so i will find out more when get there, as i don't know if they will keep him in over night & then tell him there finding the next day just have 2 see, thanks 4 getting back 2 me & u take care x

  • Hi

Glad that you now know when the biopsy will take place. I have no medical knowledge but when my husband had his biopsy, his appointment was in the morning and he was home after around 4hrs (he did not want me to go with him and drove himself there and back). It was nearly two weeks later that he had next appointment to discuss findings(after the examination of whatever was taken away during the procedure) and forward planning.  Would certainly recommend that you write down any questions you may have (and the replies that you receive) as so often the mind goes blank when you are trying to take everything in. Jules

  • Thank you Jules

This is a great help to me got everything down on paper ready, you take care x

  • I'll keep my fingers crossed for him Wednesday

  • Hi mower = well lets hope this turns out not too bad. I am sorry dad is in pain when he eats. Would he take any of those very fashionable drinks made in a blender? I use a blended mix of fruit and wheat germ for my breakfast - and its wonderful!! I feel more energetic all day and my stomach finds it easy to digest. Just a thought..

The waiting game is quite a thing isn't it? It will take a while while the doctors prepare their treatments and look at the scans etc. Then they will get cracking with it!! In meantimes - I would keep your pecker up and go for walks and keep busy - the time will quickly pass I am sure. I know its very very upsetting - I don't  know why life can't just carry on for ever = but it doesn't and some times things happen when - you know - they shouldn't. Some times I just put this huge worry into the hands of the Almighty and pretent that nothing is happening. Its my way.

We will be thinking of dad this evening and also you of course

  • Thank you Steven

This will be the 3rd time in 18 mths he will be fighting 4 his life as the 1st time was 17.10.13, he was put on 60omg of Carbamazepine, 300mg Gabapentin & 1.5mg of pizotifen all in 1 go because he had a stabbing pain in his face I was telling the nurses Fay & night some think is wrong with him, it went on for 5 days he couldn't talk or move, I asked if he had a stroke but he hadn't so I said it most be the meds he's on has he only started them on the 10th & kept falling over so ended up in hospital on the 14th with broken hip, kept off meds till 17th after his opp was talking & everything till then. But they couldn't stop them as I needed 2 get gp 2 call them 1st thing Monday 2 stop them so I did,  by the next day he was talking 2 me but the side effects of taking them all was to most 4 his body, ended up with 3 bloodtranfusion on the 25th but still confused plus not eating or drinking most then he started 2 improve abit, then on the 1.11.13 he ended up having the runs both ends I mean both ends (poo) he has this happen about 2 times a yr. But with everything that's gone on he ended up in organ failure & we need 2 call family in & say our goodbyes, then the Doctor said he could put a line in his neck (1 in 10) chance it could work or it could bring his death on faster, it worked he was in HDU 4 a week but was told he my not be the same as he was b4, I didn't care he made it but still had a long way 2 go was they visiting him 2 times a day plus going 2 work as I was told the 1st  week they can pick up just b4 they die. 11.11.13 sitting in a chair 4 the 1st time plus I was told he had 2 have  iron infusions as iron tables not working on him plus he couldn't walk, went with him 4 an MRI scan on the 7.01.14 was told there was something on the scan but not clear what it is (on his Nick) was told he would not walk again & don't even ty it, we could take him home the end of Jan but went back 4 another MRI on the 07.02.14 had 2 ring round 4 results & TOLD all ok & would see him in 6mths time & now this. Sorry about the rant take care x

  • Poor dad he has been through quite a journey already.  What can I say?  Just that we will keep you in mind today - it's awful seeing all this pain and suffering and feeling help less. I sincerely how things come together and dad improves.

We will be thinking of you all today

    Xx

  • Hi Brighteyes

Yes he has been through a lot some say it would of been better if he didn't pull through 18 months ago as he will be in a lot of pain one day & others say you have had  extra time with him as should of died back then but I disagree with both of them answers as I have enjoyed them 18 months & still enjoying the time we have, thank you for being here & how are you doing? Take care x

  • Well yes I do understand -- any time with dad is- well - precious.  Thank goodness he has you.  I am sure he thinks every day is precious also.  We went for a walk today and I thought about you and all the others on the forum.  How special you really are: when you think of all the people pushing and shoving in the super market I work in - how little peace they have- well I know we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and we don't know their story. But we do sometimes,  although we shouldn't.  You are special!  As all the people on here are xxxx

  • That was lovely what you said thank you & yes everyone is so brave & special on here take care x
