Continuing the journey

Hi All

Decided to drop the 'month' from the title of this thread as time moves so quickly and the date becomes irrevelant so quickly.

Hubby and I both feeling pretty drained today but not because of his illness. However it is something that has made both us further stressed and 'outside our control'.  Prepare yourselves for a rant or look away now.

Having put in a long work day yesterday (both of us). I switched on my mobile on leaving work to find a message from the social worker for Mum (regular readers of my thread will know what we have been going through recently).  The upshott of this message was that the Social Services panel have decided that they can offer Mum a place at a sheltered housing complex but not the most local one. The call was to advise me of the panel's decision and to tell me that a visit will be arranged this week, preferably by Wednesday, for Mum to be taken to visit the flat and be told about the package of care and how it will work. They require a decision from Mrs K (this is how my mother is addressed in the follow up e-mail!!) by Friday otherwise the placement will be offered to another service provider!  Unfortunately this means Mum has little choice but to move further away (closest sheltered housing has no vacancy and they are  not willing to help fund where she has spent the last 9 months 'settling in').  The guilt I feel at being unable to cope with this is overwhelming, my hubby is very supportive and angry in equal parts and I am dreading the days ahead.  I am unable to take leave and my negative feelings towards her social worker would not work in Mum's favour as she needs to go on the visit with an open mind and the care home staff state she is quite able to make her own mind up.  If she agrees I will be unable to visit as regularly (my problem not theirs of course) but apparently the social worker will accompany her and I have asked to be kept informed.

Even typing this is making me sad/angry/frustrated and emotionally/physically drained.  I was due to visit Mum today but this is on hold until I have spoken to the care home this morning. Hubby says I should leave it till later in the week when we know what is going on and I suspect he is right (bearing in mind my physical upset involves many 'loo' visits (enough said!!)).

Sorry for all the negativity but just needed to get it out and try and get  myself together before I start on the phone calls.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Regards Julesxx

  • Hi Jules,

So glad your hubby's consultation went well and the doctor was very thorough! Good news about getting the go ahead for your well deserved weekend away too!

You mentioned about the doctor prescribing steroids to enhance your hubby's appetite. I was prescribed them for the 3 days following chemo infusions (to help with nausea and appetite) and they really did help. They also improved my energy levels too! I used to take one with breakfast and one at 2 o'clock. I was advised not to take them after this time as they could impact on my night's sleep. I did feel a bit like the Duracell Bunny sometimes!

Great to read that the sun shone on you today! We popped over the Pennines to look at a business for sale (not quite what we wanted) and the sun was shining in Lancashire! Sadly, it didn't follow us back to Yorkshire! And the forecast for the rest of the week looks positively chilly! Brrr! Good excuse to cosy up on the sofa!

Hope the rest of your week goes well and you get yours and your hubby's glad rags packed!

Enjoy a fabulous weekend and do let us know all about it when you get back!

    Love and hugs, Jo xx

  • Morning Hope

Well no celebrations just quiet acceptance from hubby and a concern that he would become addicted to drugs!!! (consultant explained that with a specific job to do for the medication, addiction was not an issue as it was being 'controlled/monitored').  Just goes to show what you learn in the consultancy meeting (never would have had a clue about these thoughts). He does seem to be more relaxed about going away now that the appointment is behind him.  The main reason for Bournemouth is thats where the social event is taking place.  The friends live round the corner to us but we will travel separately and meet there sometime after lunch Friday.  (Need to go and get my hair cut early in the morning Friday before setting off and that will give hubby a chance to have his normal lie in before we travel)

Enjoy your day off today.  I am working longer hours today (following main book audit yesterday which I missed!!) to help get department back to some kind of normal and playing catch up on other jobs that had to go on hold.(some of our staff will have worked 12 hrs yesterday so will start later today.  Also I need to book my last 2 days holiday which have to be taken by end of March.  Hoping to get a Thursday and Monday which will give me 6 day break!! (taking in account  my normal non work days and the weekend - crafty).  Take care, chat soon.Jules xx

  • Hi Brian

Thanks for your kind response, yes a certain amount of relief thats for sure.

Glad MrsB warfarin check went well (Mum also on this drug so know how important it is to keep levels right).  How is your brother in law at the moment and also your Dad?

Also seee you are being kept busy making things and writing.  You certainly make the most of your time or is it the wife's way of keeping you busy so as to ward off Brianitus!!

Am working longer hours today so wont be home till evening so that should keep me out of mischief.   Have a peaceful day.  Jules xx

  • Hi Jo

Thanks for your kind response and the useful info regarding your use of steroids.  We are awaiting call from GP as hospital sent 'urgent' fax to try and get new meds in place  before we go away (I am a little doubtful here as they are not known for moving fast!!).  Its only the new drugs he needs at the moment as everything else is on repeats through our chemist so he only has to phone to arrange those when we return.  Of course, it remains tobe seen as to whether he will follow consultant's advice re the steroids (he is I imagine pondering on this!!).

Looking for a new business sounds exciting and hope you find what you are looking for (dont you overdo it now!!) - what are you hoping for?

Certainly chilly here this morning so can imagine you may be ever colder further north.  Lets hope some sun can be seen just to make us smile.  Mind you I am working longer day today so wont get to see any of it (work upstairs - no windows!!!) hey ho.  Only two days to work then a 5 day break (away for 3) - it feels like a real holiday and will treat it as such!!

Have a peaceful day and take care of  yourelf.  Jules xx

  • Hi Jules,

Glad to hear your good / positive news from husbands consultation.

Hope you have a really good time in Bournemouth with your friends etc.

And your extra time off work.

    You deserve it.

    Hugs

  • Hi Jules,

Hope you are not too tired after work today. Brother in law will see the specialist on Friday and I will be pleased for I don't think his new local doctor has much knowledge of prostate cancer. For he should have had his second hormone injection about two/three weeks ago and yet this doctor has said he doesn't need it for another month. Sister in law has no faith in him either. Haven't heard wither my father had heard when his operation can go ahead.

My wife likes her new table top for her puzzles as she has been able to put all the pieces on it at once. Have not been able to see my grandchildren tonight as two of them have bad colds. Tomorow night I have another meeting of the small local cancer charity.

I bet you are looking forward to your weekend away. How did hubby get onwhen he drove in to work on Monday? Hope it all went well.

Hope work starts to be a little easier for you tomorow. Do take care, Brian.

  • Hi Brian

Well.have to say doing over 2hrs extra on my feet has left its mark!!!!  ( I was lucky some of the staff have been doing 12hr shifts during this audit)  Was so glad to get home and flop in chair but it did not last long as we both needed a drink and there is only one person in this house who knows where the kitchen is.

How annoying for your brother and sister in law that they feel let down by their local GP.Trouble with new faces is they do not know family history etc and really hope his appointment on Friday goes well and his injection programme can be sorted quickly.  Added stress is not what the doctor ordered!! Iam sure you will h ear from Canada as soon as they know anything - it cant be easy worrying from a distance.

Hubby managed reasonably well with the trip into work though was tired by time he got back (still know he would rather be there than here but nothing to be done about that - at least they are keeping his brain active by phoning when they need advice).

Well its only 24hrs since his appointment and already the consultant has been in touch with the GP to set the wheels turning so to speak.  He also gets to see the GPnext week so that she is kept in the loop.  Still waiting to see if he gets new medication before we go away.  Have been very impressed with his hospital consultant and her support team which apparently also now includes community nurses attached to her so when that need arises she will arrange that to as she says that will save some trips to the hospital later on.  I know how lucky we are to be be within a 20min drive (when traffic light).

Hope your grandchildrens'colds soon clear up as I am sure you all miss seeing each other and it great that MrsB can now spread her puzzle pieces out as it makes it much easier to see whats going on. Keep sayingI will get us one to do (I quite enjoyed doing the ones with our grandson though they were only 100 pieces - he 'let me start them' as long as he put in the last couple of pieces when he then announced 'he had finished it!! ).

Well looking forward to a quiet evening as we have just finished dinner and myManager  wondered whether I would like to start at 6.30 a.m. tomorrow (he knows I have trouble sleeping) - needless to say I dont think I will be that eager to leave the comfort of home!!!

Have a lovely weekend.  Jules xx

  • Morning Susananne

Many thanks for  your encouraging words and your lovely tale about rusty - really made me smile.  Animals certainly have a way of lifting the spirits.  My son has a little westie and she is full of life at just over a year old now.  They have lots of lovely walks locally but being white they are getting used to the bathing process with so much mud around.  We actually have no pets of our own now (plenty when the children were  young but the biggest was a cat!!) but two cats who live locally regularly come and visit and spend time being fussed by hubby (and me when i am in).

Hubby's consultant wasted no time and he has already had contact from GP  following up after his appointment.  We are very lucky to get such good medical support and hope the new regime (another one to master!!) helps with his backache.  After a long day shifting lots of books yesterday its debatable whose back ached the most!!! At least after today I get a little break from work and the kitchen sink and plan to make the most of it.  Hope you have a peaceful weekend and that you see more of the sun (not great here yesterday - got soaked walking home from the station despite a  brolly). By the looks of the forecast might be worth taking wellies with me but there is plenty to do where we are going so do not expect to be worried by a bit more rain.

Take care and chat again soon I hope. Jules xx

  • Hi Annabel

Thanks for your kind message and I am counting down the hours till tomorrow I can tell  you.  Just need to get through work today (more book moving about to make sure we get our returns done on time).  My manager actually wanted me to get in early today and possibly stay on again but I have politely refused as I would like to enjoy my short break, not spend it recovering!!!

Hope you are keeping okay and that your son is enjoying his new job and Ava is giving you some lovely smiles 'over the web'.  How long before the family visits again?  My daughter was happy earlier in the week as Zack slept through the night two nights running (she hope it carries on this time - that last time he did this it did not last long!!!).  They are enjoying baby massage classes locally for four weeks and then she will re-join mum and baby group (has a couple to go to) much the same as she used to with her eldest.  Time is passing all too quickly but they bring a lot of joy.

Have a peaceful weekend, speak when I return.  Jules xx
