Kidney cancer

Hi my father in law has kidney cancer that has spread to his lungs he is having immunotherapy and targeted treatment but has many side effects with the treatment…. His treatment is at a hospital out of the area but I’m wondering if it’s right that he is having to wait to be referred to different departments to deal with the side effects ie.. has a foot problem common with the treatment but has been referred to a podiatrist has severe mental health issues and has been given medication by gp to take on bad days…. Everything just seems to be all over the place I thought he would be fast tracked or it could all be dealt with by the cancer centre but feel maybe this hasn’t happened due to his treatment being in a different hospital???? Hope this makes sense to someone

I'm sorry to hear that your father-in-law is dealing with a number of different health issues at the moment, many of which are related to the treatment that he's receiving. It sounds like it's really frustrating for you all trying to juggle so many different appointments with different specialists.

In an ideal world, seamless one-stop care for our loved ones would be our preference every time. Sadly, that is often not the case, and there are many factors that play into that.

Does your father-in-law have a specialist cancer nurse? Even if they are based outside of your local area, they should be aware of the services that your father-in-law can access and make sure that any necessary referrals have clear information about his diagnosis. If it would help to chat things through with one of our nurses, you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support that might help you all moving forward. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that your father-in-law and you as a wider family, can access the support you need to make this time a little easier.

    Best wishes,
