Dad has stage 4 prostate cancer and drinks

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer which had metastized in March and it's been incredibly up and down. He recently had his last round of chemo and is waiting on a scan to essentially see if it's all been 'worth it'. However, he acts erratically and often drinks alcohol as a coping mechanism. This has been an occurence for years when things would get difficult so this is nothing new but in his more fragile state I am incredibly worried about him. He tends to disappear and refuse to pick up his phone. When he comes back he acts like everything is fine but I find empty bottles and cans hidden in his room. I am working full time so I can't keep watch over him but I feel so exhausted about what my life has become. He's very down on himself about getting help, stating that there are many people more worse off than him and that he is being useless but my entire family try to convince him otherwise. He did go to a Maggies Centre recently but came home and very obviously had had something to drink, and I found an empty vodka bottle in his room this morning. I just don't know what to do. It feels like there's nothing I can say or do that will make this better. I worry for my mum and my brother. He is only 21 and I am 24. It just all feels very downhill from here.

  • Hi ladyseaforth,

How hard it must be for you at the moment to see your dad like this and it must be a time when you are feeling a little bit powerless and it's so thoughtful of you too to worry for your mum and brother. It's great that he managed to get through his last round of chemotherapy and I am keeping everything crossed that the scan will bring some good news that the chemotherapy helped in some way. You are right to worry for him though about his drinking habit which seems to have been a coping mechanism for him for years but it's never a good or successful coping mechanism and definitely not one that is recommended while going through cancer treatment. As you can see in our information on alcohol and chemotherapy and as you would probably expect, "excessive drinking would not be a good idea, whatever type of chemotherapy". It is clear from what you describe that your dad is drinking too much as you are finding the empty cans and bottles hidden in his room and it is very important that you loop in his medical team so that they know all the details fully, his erratic behaviour and the amount of alcohol he is drinking from what you can tell. This will give them a full picture of what is going on and of how hard it has been too for you and your family - it is all the more important as alcohol may interfere with his treatment or medication he may be taking. I know it's really hard for you especially as he isn't cooperating and it must feel like a massive weight on your shoulders. You could also ask them whether there is any support available in your area to deal with a situation like this and to help your dad with his alcohol problem.

It's good that he went to a Maggie's centre recently and I hope that he found it useful. I know you work full time so you may not have lots of time but it might also help you - or indeed also your mum or your brother - to pop in and talk about what is going on, about how you are currently feeling and how the situation has been affecting you and they may also have additional tips for you and your family on how to deal with this alcohol issue.

You seem so caring but what you are going through is truly exhausting and as you said it shouldn't be your responsibility to keep a constant watch over him and I hope that he will make this important step to go and seek help. But it is also really important that you look after yourself and if you find that things are getting too much and you are truly exhausted, make sure you ring your GP too as your wellbeing is paramount.

    Best wishes,
