Denial of having cancer

My daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer and a 2cm carcinoma three years ago. She refused a mastectomy or medication. .

as soon as she was told this diagnosis she shut down, refused to accept diagnosis and now three years later her mental health is so bad she refuses to listen or take advice from her family and doctors and is deteriorating.

she does however take tamoxifen but not every day

We don’t know if anyone else has experienced a family member or friend who has experienced this lengthy denial timeframe as it has had such an impact on her siblings and parents who have tried to cope with this situation.

if you have experienced this type of situation how did you cope and manage

  • Hi there,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

This sounds like an incredibly difficult situation, and it must be very difficult to process and manage.

Perhaps the doctor would have some advice about how best to approach this, and also what to potentially expect. I'm sure you will already have spoken to the doctor a lot throughout this so it may be that this hasn't worked.

I'm not sure if your daughter has someone who she is particularly close to or is more likely to listen to.

If she won't listen at all, perhaps another option would be to write things down for her to hopefully read.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of our nurses, who may have advice to offer. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Hopefully you'll also get some more replies from others on the forum soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
